Alaska is huge. The northernmost state of the U.S stretches to a size comparable to a third of the size of the continental U.S, and is only home to seven hundred thousand residents. Nearly half live in Alaska’s capital city, Anchorage. With many adventures available to the roadtripper, the true awe and majesty of Alaska opens up when you leave its limited highway system. Remote islands only accessible by bush plane or boat abound, and when 1 out of every one hundred residents has an active working pilot’s license, it may be one of the best places to find a lift. After scoring one such lift, things truly start to open up. A long day exploring the Ruth gorge, deep in Denali National Park.
