Mruffka (Мръвка) for the Soul

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

In Bulgarian, the word for meat is месо [meh-so], but just as in any language, slang words are common -- and often the most appropriate diction in the circumstances. Мръвки is one of those words that exist in every language referring to meat (in the plural, no less) -- and usually the greasier, the better.

This is a home-cured sausage waiting for winter. I guess it's about that time ;)

Well, maybe it's going a bit too far to claim that every language -- or even many languages -- have such a slang word, considering the vegan/vegetarian movements in most Western countries :D But there you have it, Bulgarians (and I dare say Slavs in general) love their meatses!

Another fellow bulgarian here! 😊 Nice to meet you. :) I don’t know why but your post reminded me of the video made for the Bulgarian EU Presidency showing so much of what bulgarians are and the beautiful nature. Maybe caus I relate the word мръвка and your photos to these small things that make us unique as a folk. Have you seen the video?

I have. Nice to meet you, too.
I've already followed you at some point, when I figured out you were Bulgarian, but welcome to the discussion!
I love all those little tiny shots that make Bulgaria stand out to me against the background of my travels. Bulgaria is a gorgeous and rewarding country to visit. Thanks for joining in!

I need to say thank you for the kind words regarding Bulgaria. 😊
See ya around.

You can’t help but fall in love with her... 😊 Your story how you came here is so inspiring. Bulgarians need to learn from such stories, to learn to appreciate more their homeland and history. Your story made me feel proud that I am Bulgarian.

I am humbled by your comments ...

I love my Bulgarian meat, but I think I prefer meso over mruffka, and I tend to stay away from the sausage for dietary reasons. Thanks for teaching me a new word, though! Priaten den :)

Mruffka is used for all types of meat. Sausage isn't the healthiest, perhaps, but when it's cured traditionally, it's much safer :) Priaten den na teb!

I havent been to Bulgaria but did spend a lot of time in the Balkans and they were meat lovers as well and I often saw sights like this

Absolutely! Serbian bbq is very famous.

Dude! I was going to post my sausage pic!!! :D

My sausage pic is wayyyy bigger than your sausage pic!

I respectfully disagree.

Respectfully, you're wrong :D

How can you know who is right when you don't know what my pic looks like?

Other than the fact that I have already seen it, I have self-confidence.

Congrats on your self-confidence.

All you do is talk about how big your sausage pic is. Why don't you just post it to let us steemians decide?

I should probably be Bulgarian.

And I loved the general meat appreciation in Europe. Prosciutto hanging in Italian store windows was the best :)

Yes, you should be Bulgarian! :D Drying meat is a source of pride in Europe :)

and the word for alcohol is Rakia haha, I'm a fellow Bulgarian. That beef jerky looks awesome. Great post.

Not all alcohol in Bulgaria is rakia, but rakia is all the alcohol a Bulgarian needs ;) Nice to meet you. I live in Sofia. Have for 25 years :) P.S. Are you on our channel? https://discord.gg/HpREmYS

yes that is true. I am originally from Dimitrovgrad, but live in Michigan. I will check out your channel.

Likewise ;)
