β˜‚οΈπŸŒ³ Wicked Big Leaves Redux -- The Umbrella Magnolia is Flowering β˜‚οΈπŸŒ³

In a Steemit post back on November 28, 2016 I shared some captures of the gigantic 20-inch long leaves of an umbrella magnolia tree that resides in the 22-acre David C. Shaw Arboretum in Holmdel Park.

11/28/2016: Umbrella Magnolia - Wicked Big Leaves

In that post from last Fall, this umbrella magnolia's monster leaves had already dropped, dried up, and turned a tobacco-brown color on the top-side side,

and a grayish-white color on the underside.

It was that grayish-white coloring that initially drew my attention to the tree, as I could see all the leaves on the ground from the road as I drove by the back side of the arboretum. I though that is was actually litter or even a whole bunch of mushrooms.

Well, this amazing tree is now flowering, so I thought I'd share some fresh Spring captures of the flowers with you.

The flowers are quite beautiful IMHO and also quite large as you'll see in these images. And I also think you'll understand just why this tree is aptly named an umbrella magnolia.

There were a whole bunch of strawberry plants growing in the shade of this tree.

All images @cognoscere and taken on Thursday 06/08/2017 in the David C. Shaw Arboretum in Holmdel Park, New Jersey (Sony RX100 V)

BIG! And great shots!

Thanks!!!

Absolutely beautiful and I applaud your photos showing the actual dimension of the flowers and the leaves. Without the addition of your hand in the photo the extraordinary size would have been lost.

Thanks for the kind words @marymg2014!

welcome !

I want to make an umbrella with the leaves :) @cognoscere

You could probably do it if you were creative enough and knew how to join leaves together.

:D

Those are amazingly monstrous. And beautiful. I really like the idea of going back out and continuing on in the spring of the year. Very creative. Now you have to wait till winter to get the full on snow pictures. Thanks for the update.

It's hard to remember to revisit some of the things you've already posted about to see changes/improvements, etc. I guess if I were the organized type you could setup a calendar reminder, but alas ...

Whatever you do, don't come to me for an organizational system suggestion...whatever that might be

Beautiful pictures. There was a saying among friends that when you have your first child you should plant a magnolia tree because its leaves and blooms would be needed to decorate for the many school functions that the child would be involved.

Hmmm, never heard that saying, interesting!
