With the help of the microscope, mankind has the power to bring out a new world. To honor micscopic photos and the world they reveal, the Nikon Small World photo contest annually awards the most amazing images.
This year, more than 2,000 photos have been featured in the competition, of which the jury selected 20 winners. The images were chosen based on complexity, subject, but also beauty. According to Science Alert, the first-ranked image has a keratin structure in the human skin cell.
