My second post today is of a Carpenter Bee. This one is the Horsefly-like Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa Tabaniformis). I was a little surprised that that was really what they are know as but it’s what they’re often mistaken for in addition to bumblebees. These do have a hairy underside to the belly and yellow “racing” stripes on the sides, but the back is shiny black. My favorite feature is their eyes which to the naked eye look grey but on closer inspection have a bluish tint making them quite striking. These guys move quickly and erratically making them quite difficult to nab in flight so I was quite ecstatic to finally get one!
