My Day with Bambi and the Birds

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

I spend a great deal of time at my parent's house. I enjoy their company, they live on the lake and they're surrounded by woods, what more can you ask for? Well the other day I was treated to another bonus when 'Bambi' showed up.

Initially I took the picture from a distance, afraid that when I reached the little guy or gal it would spook.

Have you seen the movie "Australia"? The little boy in the film would sing to animals, he even made a stampeding herd stop in its tracks. Now that might be a bit fantastical, but they do say music soothes the savage beast. And now that I had gotten close enough, I wanted the cute little fawn to look at me, so I started to hum.

It worked! I actually was able to take several pictures, but this one was the clearest. Once I was finished snapping photos I walked even closer, still humming, and for a minute it appeared to be mesmerized. It finally took off just when I was going to take another picture, probably less than ten feet away.

As I walked out of the woods I heard the cries of gulls and looked up to find a pretty big number of them circling. I'm not sure what brought them away from the lake, but they were really pretty to watch.

Aww...that is a beautiful little Bambi. It's neat it let you get so close. The possums where I live aren't afraid of humans so the let me get pretty close when I chase them away from the garbage cans. Not the same magic I'm sure you felt seeing the little deer lol.

Yeah, I've definitely been up close and personal with a possum or two, they're scary looking dudes lol! Definitely not the same. Though I do enjoy seeing chipmunks :)

I wish I could have had the opportunity to grow up in the countryside around the woods rather than be confined in our huge metropolises.

I've watched bambi before when I was pretty young and it is always great to let your childhood fantasy become a reality. Much like when kids see a clownfish they instantly bellow 'Look, It's Nemo!' haha

Great Photographs @dreemit

Where is is that you live?
I was actually born on Long Island, just forty minutes from New York City and far more of a metropolis than this. My parents wanted to get away from the city life and moved us upstate when I was ten. It's amazing the different just a few hour drive can make here.

Or a meerkat- it's Timon! LOL!

You weren't kidding when you said you tend to have fabulous days! ;-)

What a precious encounter to have with the fawn. Creation lifts the spirit like nothing else, as you say... and now you've reminded me it's time I got back out into nature. Easy to forget when you're caught up in busy city life each day. :)

It is easy to forget, I lived in Florida for three years, just south of Sarasota and much more city. I loved the beaches there and I loved that the winters were like summer, but I definitely missed this area. Here we're surrounded by national forests, huge lakes and lots of waterfalls :)

That sounds wonderful. While I'll rarely turn down a beautiful beach day... there's just something about being surrounded by trees, plants, greenery and animals... it's just so very alive!

We've got the Peak District National Park near where I am, it's a ramblers and climbers paradise... although no Bambis. There's supposedly a mythical giant black cat that lives out there though! Not sure I'd be happy getting up close and personal to take photos of it, if it does exist haha!

That is truly wondrous. I love those opportunities and to think the little feller let you get so close!

I know, I was so excited! I insist that it was because of the humming, my daughter keeps rolling her eyes at me haha!! Speaking of daughter's, I did read your monkey raper post (hahaha) but my computer was being a beast and wouldn't load my comment. It should work now :)

Hehe, what a day that was!! Rapers and monkeys reading shit!!

Hehe, I have never seen one so close so you are very lucky. The humming worked a treat ;0)

Your photos are superb. I love nature. I know that it is difficult to take pictures of animals. Great job.

Why thank you! I love nature too, and yes, generally it is tough to get a good shot of a wild animal. I can never get one of a full grown deer, they've learned to be skittish by then, this little guy apparently doesn't know any better yet. :)

Very beautiful and cool. It inspired me to post a few of my own.

Thank you! Glad to be an inspiration, I'll have to check them out :)

What else we want from life if nature is all around us and we are happy to be with it.

So true that there's nothing like Creation to lift out spirits. And nothing like having to be still and centered within ourselves, to be able to capture the image of a shy animal, bird or insect.

Love hearing about how you hummed when appraching 'Bambi' ~ Humming can be very therapeutic for us to do and obviously had a calming influence on 'Bambi' too.

I've photographed dragonflies and waterdragons and can totally relate to the experience of being VERY slow and quiet when approaching these magical creatures. Will certainly try humming next time the opportunity presents itself.

Lovely comment, thank you! Definitely try out humming. I am heading over to your page to check you out :)

Pleasure. If you want to look further into the healing effects of humming a great book (reading at the moment) is 'The Humming Effect ~ Sound healing for health and happiness' by Jonathan and Andi Goldman.

Revealing how sound can literally rearrange molecular structure and how humming not only helps with stress levels and sleep and blood pressure but also increases lymphatic circulation and melatonin production; releases endorphins ; releases nitic oxide, a neurotransmitter fundamental to health and well-being and may create new neural pathways to the brain.

Really lovely to connect with you now @dreemit

What a soul filling experience! I just love seeing amazing creatures in their natural habitat. I need a lake house...it is my dream to live on a lake. Need to make that happen! Good to read one of your stories again :-).

It's not every day that we cross Bambi, pretty pictures !!

Beautiful feathers make beautiful birds.
great photos :) thank you so much for sharing

Nice nature photographs there! Love the bird pictures!

Thank you! You're the first to comment on the birds, everyone was too distracted by Bambi :)

Next time call ahead and make sure Thumper is there too. :)

It's great to see something like this, AND have the camera handy! That's like a National Geographic photo, the singing must have been the key.

genial

If you had to choose one word? LOL!

Nature really has a way of taking your breath away, doesn't it? I'm glad to see Bambi grow up and become a fine deer. It certainly looks like it's over it's mother's death, but I'm sure that it misses her dearly. You got so close! Great job sneaking up on it. We can make a fine ninja out of you yet :D

Nice animal. Wild life in nature..
