I suppose I'm more a person who likes to encourage someone where they have done something well rather than nitpick over triviality, as I feel there are plenty of critics in the world already. As writers we evolve our own way so I always respect that. Don't get me wrong I'm always prepared to give authentic crtiques but as I tell people, you have to ask me for that otherwise I will stick to form and praise for a job well done :)
The true art (I feel) in writing is in how we can shape but a few words in order to express a much deeper feeling or sentiment. For I see the other side of that coin, where more isn't always best, because in the past I have padded out something that was brief but informative because I feared the reader wouldn't understand the message if I didn't; but alas the irony here is that my message was actually smothered by the padding, diluting the sentiment and so it was missed anyway.
If you think of famous and successful quotes and proverbs, how they have been shared throughout the ages; how they are typically short sweet and easily memorable. Plus they have a tendency to nail the specific message in a succinct easy to digest package. Take Buddah's quote "The trouble is that you think you have time..." This is one that I will always remember. When my Father passed away I suddenly realised how fleeting life really is, how fast my life had gone (from childhood to adulthood). To stand and see all those many years now only in memory meant that on reading that quote a few weeks after, it pinpointed with precision the beating heart of that newly discovered philosophy within me so much that I couldn't help but exclaim aloud: "Yes, that's exactly it!" I'm certain Buddah could have added much more to fill it out but would it still have the same surgical delivery to the soul? I have to doubt it.
Anyway, I could drone on about how some of the greatest feature length movies were born out of short stories but this comment has gone on long enough... How ironic that my comment to support brevity turns out to be quite lengthy lol :)
