Throwback: A Whole New World

in photography •  6 years ago  (edited)

Days are getting dark so I want to bring a more whimsical and summery set of self portraits to you as a throwback, originally posted a year ago in July.

This was shot in the forests of central Finland, and it was a really hard one to do. You can only imagine how infernal the amount of mosquitoes is during a warm summer day with no wind and being near the water. I remember having to photoshop the mosquitoes out of the image because you could see them against my pale skin and the white skirt. I wouldn't normally go to shoot on a midday sun, but this spot is within a thick forest, so it's the only time of the day that the light hits this place.

I remember a day from my childhood when we would run up and down the creek with my cousins, going through the drum that goes under a road. It was like stepping into Narnia on the other side. The air is as pure as it can be, the only sounds you hear are of nature and your fellow adventurous types, beautiful dragonflies circle around your head, along with the damn mosquitoes.....

The water in the creek is of course freezingly cold, and while the water itself is clear and shallow, the humus in the bottom is almost black and it's really hard to walk in all the sharp and slippery rocks.

I am not sure if I was more afraid of falling myself, dropping my phone in there (which I used as a remote), or having the tripod and camera fall over into the water and rocks. Luckily, we all go away safe and sound, and produced these images for you.

These are photographed and modelled by me, with the Nikon D7200, but I can't recall which lens, because I didn't specify it in my old post, but some Nikkor for sure.

Sort Order:

The Lady of the Creek. Almost dropped a mobile phone into the water. The kingdom would have been of the brave man who'd have found and recovered it.

So glad that my iPhone is waterproof, the prince has time to recover it, tho he is taking his sweet time.

Here's Monty Python's take on the legend. It's sheer brilliance.

Revelation: never seen Monty Python before, but it looks kinda funny.

Photo in the forest are so cool, you seems a kind of fairty, nice, very fantasy!

Thank you very much, I do prefer living in a bit of fantasy world :)

Sometimes, you make this look so easy, I wonder if the humility in your process is so normal people like us can relate.

Only the end result looks easy, if you were to see the whole process, it wouldn't :D I don't think I am particularly humble, I know I'm pretty good at what I do.

My favorite statement on humility is a bit off the beaten path. I can't recall the exact quote, so I'll briefly explain the thought. Hopefully well:

True humility isn't about bringing yourself down. It's about knowing the truth about your greatness. When we get big headed about how wonderful we are that it blinds us to the greatness in others we are not being humble. We are all great in our own ways, the key to humility is still appreciating the greatness in others.

Great shots! I have a thing for texture in art and this location is fantastic. So much color and texture.

Thank you! Nature is easy to play with to have a lot of texture.

That looks really tricky (to shoot), just goes to show real talent, huh? ;) It's not really cold here, but just seeing these makes me wish for summer :))

Really cool shots!

but I can't recall which lens, because I didn't specify it in my old post, but some Nikkor for sure.

According to the image EXIF data you used 18.0-55.0 mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.

Haha, thanks, I was just too lazy to look it up :D

This is a really enjoyable contrast to your Noir post!

But the noir is so much better, right, right!?

Haha! Yes, yes dear.

Love this one the light is perfect and it looks like my kinda place. I love frolicking in the woods 💯🐒

This actually looks like it would be from a faraway, exotic and warm country, with colorful fishes swimming in the warm water..

Well, yes it does, but you do know the reality of it :D

I know.

It's cold, it's wet, it sucks, there's mosquitoes everywhere, it's still cold, sun is behind the clouds all the time, it's windy, it's really muddy under the water, the water if filled by ugly fish which can bite...

Yep, nice to see pretty (not only) faces around here once again! How are you?

I love these shots. Specifically the initial shot, the fourth shot and the fifth shot. The 1st one because I like how your profile looks against the dark green backdrop of the bushes, and how it looks like you have no hair because the hair blends into the bushes. It accentuates your profile. Also your arm holding back the greenery gives the picture that something different.

The 4th picture I like because it gives you a special look....Longer appearing legs and the way you are presented against the opening in the trees behind you makes you look fairytale-esque.

The 5th picture....I like the way your hair looks on your back.....It looks fuller than I remember from other pictures. It looks great. And the way the dress is presented gives the impression of a wider rump. Not better or worse....just different.

Damn mosquitoes! I think I can see the swelling from where they bit you...... twice.
lol

I think I need a 100 more mosquito bites... tactically placed of course.

You gorgeous fairy you!🌱
I love the contrast of your white dress with all the greenery💜
