Oh The Things you See on a Trail Cam at Night on the Homestead

in photography •  8 years ago

Having a trail cam on the Homestead is a necessary piece of equipment, especially when you live in the bush. My parents live right outside of Algonquin Park, Ontario, which is about a 10 minute drive for me. Last night was a busy night. My parents are avid Homesteaders, with large gardens and an Orchard. Their property is 57 acres. These are some images that the trail cam captured last night. One is on the front porch facing the driveway, and the other is on the back porch facing the trail down to the lake. Enjoy.

Good new's is the moose left the compost bin alone, and the bear did not touch the garden's. But he did manage to find his way to the garbage bin. My parents are building a new one today, this time out of Metal. LOL

I have an occasional moose wander through my yard but primarily deer. We have cougars around once in a while as well. Our farm is close to the highway so a lot of predators stay away as they are still not super used to people.

Bears can be a major pain if they are adjusted/habituated to and comfortable with humanity, and can be major opportunists. I grew up near Yosemite and in the 1990s the bears there would rummage through the garbage bins with tourists all around them. Also super good at removing a car door for food stuffs.

Really who would have thought that they could remove a car if hungry. Good to know as I sometimes go and stay the night at my parents, and the kids leave unfinished food in the back seat of the car.

According to a 2008 study published in the journal Human–Wildlife Conflicts,

During 1998, there were 1,584 bear incidents, resulting in over $650,000 of property damage [in Yosemite.] Of those incidents, 85% involved damage to vehicles by bears in search of food.

They know the food is there from habituation but they also have extremely good sense of smell.

You nailed it, good sense of smell, but the funny thing was that the garbage was kitty litter. LOL

HA! Serves 'em right... maybe it'll decide that's not a good spot to look for dinner.
Still chuckling...

Beautiful photography

Thank you but is was actually a trail cam hanging on front and back porch.LOL

Lots of action last night on the game cams! 57 acres wow how awesome is that. My grandparents have a cottage in Haliburton area where I spent a lot of time growing up. We also have friends in Huntsville and North Bay.

Huntsville is about a 2 hour drive from me. Algonquin Park is the largest provincial park in Ontario. We are at the Sand Lake Gate end, the far other end of the park. Barron Canyon end.

Oh I see you're over on the Quebec border

about 10 mins drive to Quebec Border

Nice

I have had a troublesome cow moose on my acreage as well. She all the new growth on just about every bush. I can't bring myself to do anything about it though, and just leave her to her business. She doesn't really bother anything, and as living in the area before I arrived.

Awesome! My parents just set up one of those out at camp. I'm excited to see what shows up. Assuming the unit doesn't get stolen that is.
