A Peek Inside My "Camera Bag"

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hello, fellow Steemians! This will be an honest disclosure of what's inside my messenger (camera) bag at the moment, and I am fully aware that what I am about to share may affect my reputation as a photographer :) In the photos below is my trusty French Connection, which I bought half a decade ago with the intention of being more stylish while carrying my university textbooks and laptop. It has also accommodated clothes, beer cans, food, and other stuff during my countles travels and bike rides.

The bag has a total of 3 compartments: one big one where I put the camera, my clothes, and other chunky objects, one zipper pocket for smaller things and beer bottles (yeah, that's right), and a small velcro pocket at the back where I normally place papers, chewing gums, and my ID badge. As there's no padding whatsoever, I usually lay an old T-shirt on the bottom to serve as a cushion for the camera. If I am traveling, I place the camera on the top of my clothes.

The Absolute Essentials:
• The camera itself (that's obvious).
• Rocket blower - my favorite accessory, which I use to blow dust particles off the lens and clean my laptop's keyboard. And sometimes, it's just plain fun to squeeze it.
• Extra batteries - I am not the type of person that takes hundreds of photos; thus, I rarely use the other batteries when I am out shooting. That said, batteries drain more quickly in cold weather.
• Extra memory card - a real lifesaver when I forget my SD card in the computer.
• Notebook & pen - for when ideas strike me.
• Beanie - winters are cold here.

The Other Stuff
• Thermos flask - during the week, I always bring homebrewed coffee with me as the one at work sucks (plus, it's expensive).
• Deo Stick - you never know when you are going to need it.
• Tissues - for runny noses.
• Sports card - never used.
• Røde VideoMicro - sometimes, I shoot short video clips for the company.

You may think that it's ridiculous to keep expensive gear inside such a bag. Maybe. However, I love the old unobtrusive look of it. Plus, it has a sentimental value to me. So, I reckon I will keep using it for as long as possible.

What's inside your camera bag?

Cheers,
Dan

I have a fancy handmade leather camera bag with my initials and everything! I've used it maybe four times. I need something more sentimental and rustic.

Great post but I gotta say...little disappointed not to see a selfie with the beanie 😄

Thank you, and to soothe your disappointment, I took a selfie ;)

Let me guess, that bag was a birthday gift from close friends of yours :)

Lookin' very irreverent, Dan. 😶

And...Yup! You're a freakn' psychic.

You travel a lot lighter than I! Definitely an interesting choice of bag, but if it works, it works!

I currently use a backpack for longer trips, but it's a little cumbersome. It's also partly responsible for the broken collar bone I got about a year-and-a-half ago.

Dude, I never thought that you could get your collarbones damaged by the weight of the backpack. For trips that a longer than a couple of days, I use a backpack too.

Love this!! I don't have a "real" camera bag either, I just kinda bring it along with me however possible haha

That's what real photographers do :P

I like your bag. I found an old banana in my camera bag. In one of those never used compartments. Banana became something else. Almost slapped me. The rest, as usual: cleaning liquid, some fine leather napkins for the lens, the camera, a pen, a notebook and 100 lei bill for the time I'm stuck somewhere with no wallet. :)

Lol, that's probably the worst thing that could happen to a bag 😂 How did you clean it? Thanks for stopping by, Catalin ;)

By fire, Dan. Fire cleanse it all! :)))) Jking, just asked my wife and after a period of mumblings and muffled curses she cleaned it.

Hehe, I thought for a moment that fire would've been necessary to kill the thing, which once was a banana :)

I think its a great bag, and somewhat subtle so many that see it would never guess its a camera bag

Yes, that's probably the best thing about it :)

My city bag is a little subtle but nit so much so

  • 2 extra batteries
  • 4gb spare SD card
  • 2 lens cloths
  • 2 liquid bottles(99% alcohol and 1% alcohol)
  • 18-55 lens, 50mm lens
  • Pentax K50 + DA 50-135
  • remote
  • 52mm 10stop ND
  • 52mm CIRpl
  • some piece of rubber to cover the viewfinder during long exposures

I carry my camerabag in my rucksack :D

At first, I thought that you carry booze to keep yourself warm in those cold Estonian days and nights 😁

I like your camera bag. I have one similar for a laptop that I use when I travel, but I also have a typical camera bag. It just has my lenses and lens covers and silicon baggies and SD cards. Nothing fancy. I do need one of those Rocket blowers tho - never seen one before!!

You are totally prepared....almost like a camera bug out bag.

That's what everyone says when they see the rocket blower 😁 The price has gone up though; I picked picking mine for about 10 USD on Amazon Uk, and right now, it's 22 CAD on Amazon Canada.

A bug out bag?! Lol 😂Thanks for stopping by, Deb!

Those are some good treasures @irreverent-dan I hope that you take a lot of good photos in the future. I would love to do what you are doing but now I am just very limited on what I can do.
You have a runny nose have read, do take vitamin c regularly and you won't get colds again.

Thank you, I will try to! Though I often find myself in moments of creative block.
You are a hero, man! I hope your condition improves soon so that you can start doing the things that you love doing.
