Stone and mud houses in the Himalaya

in photography •  7 years ago

Manaslu region...everyone's houses look something like this...although that two story one on the left is much bigger than normal...also the piece of metal roofing means they have access to some money. Many of the houses just have slabs of stone for a roof. The one on the right, you see the brown stuff stuck to the wall...that's mule shit. People pick it up and press it against the walls to dry, it also keeps the path clear...then as it dries, you break it off and burn it in the fire.

Firewood is pretty hard to come by. We're probably 12-15 days walk from a road...very high up, perhaps 12,000 feet?

lol, they definitely saw most of their planks by hand out there. the powerlines come from micro-hydro installs typically, it depends, but most of the actual villages out there usually manage to get some form of micro-hydro running, gives people lights, and occasionally a satellite television ...they love the television, it's amazing :P

Yeah, I've been jamming with Troilo a bit, he makes beautiful art, that guitar is gorgeous

hey fur-ro-shus! My good friend Lily just made her intro post as LadyLunasi, Would you go say hi?!!! THANKYOU!!!!

that is what live in the mountains teaches... enjoy what you have... Appreciate when the sun comes out of the clouds, though only for a minute and do not complain about nature, let it flow like a river ...

It's amazing... 12-15 days of walk from a road. :O Manslu region, I will check it, seems like on another planet. By the way, I finally recorded a tune with my "psychedelic" guitar, I would be honored if you gave me an Itchy's feedback. <3

Holy molly really nice place ! My daddy have been in himalaya and he told me a lot of things about this place. Maybe someday i will go there too! This is my dream

I would recommend going if you ever have the opportunity. As beautiful as the mountains are, the people are very kind and fun.

Nepal is so high on my list! Love seeing little bits and pieces of such a resilient culture like this.

yeah, it's a crazy place. you definitely realize how strange metropolitan systems are when you see little old villages spread throughout the mountainsides. with burial cairns all over, you're probably walking by your dead relatives every day...

An astute observation. That sounds a lot like Ireland. When something gets old and collapses (buildings OR people) you just move a few feet over on the land and start new, and boom! Your backyard is history.

hell yeah!

I did not even think that in our time there are such houses somewhere ...

Nice and simple street with an epic background. I really like this photo.

nature at its best. the feeling there must be insane!

Wow beautiful photo @itchykitten! What an incredibly different culture than I'm used to seeing. Fascinating and sobering. Really puts things into perspective..

Wonderful! I would like to stay in such villages. Thanks for sharing.
