One of my best shots from Kauai

in photography •  8 years ago

We used to live on the North Shore of Kauai. Just for a year and a half, but it was a magical time. Costa Rica is great, but Kauai is paradise.

This spot is called Tourist Lumahai. Its the place they shot a famous scene in the movie South Pacific. On the North shore the ocean is calm during summer and we would jump from the spot where my camera is into the water between the cliff and the rock you see. The beach is usually crowded and the water is like a lake.

In the winter you would not want to be where I was taking this shot. We get 40 foot waves that slam these rocks. Unfortunately, many people don't respect or understand the power of the ocean and wind up swept out drowned at this spot. I you visit in winter, be cautious. This day the ocean was alive and I thought it would be cool to blur the water as the waves swept over the rocks. I had to be quick because the waves were breaking on the rock I was on too. Here it is...

It was morning and semi rainy, but at times pretty bright. I set the camera on shutter priority , put on the widest lens I have (sigma 10-20), attached a neutral density filter, I think 2 stops, and set it to f22. I had a tripod and hung the camera upside-down so I could get very low to the rocks in the foreground. The key was to block just enough light so for proper exposure the camera would leave the shutter open for longer than usual. In this case, about 1 and a half seconds. The waves would break over the rock and then wash away creating a river like motion between the rocks. The other key was to quickly lift the camera and hang on before the waves took it and me out!

Anyway, I'm open to suggestions, please let me know what you think!
