What's in my camera bag? ๐Ÿ“ธ

Hey Steemit Friends!

Today I have decided to show you what I take with me to every photography job or opportunity. I hope you will take some tips away from this. My method for selecting camera equipment is to choose quality but also save on cost, you will see what I mean shortly. So without any hesitation, here is what's in my camera bag! (it's a big bag!)

1-2.jpg

1. Camera
I shoot with a Canon 6D. It's the cheapest Canon full frame and I couldn't justify spending 1.5k more on a 5Dii. As far as I can see, the only difference is that the 5Dii has more focus points and has an extra memory card slot. I absolutely love this camera, it's perfect for all situations.

Additionally I carry a GoPro Hero 4 Black. You never know when you want to create a quick video or get a different perspective with the wide angle.

2. Lenses
My go to lens is the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. It never really leaves the camera, it's perfect for most situations. It costs half of the Canon version and has image stabilisation where the Canon version doesn't. I'd definitely trade a tiny bit of sharpness to gain IS and save money.

I also have the Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8. This is a great lens. I use it every time I do a wedding. You don't have to be in the wedding couples faces when taking a shit and from a distance there's lots of creamy bokeh!

Lastly, I have a Canon 50mm f/1.4. It's definitely worth spending the extra money and getting the f/1.4 version over the f/1.8. This lens is perfectly sharp for product, food and portrait photography.

3. Lighting
I use a Godox AD600 for my main fill light. This thing is amazing! It's battery powered so it's perfect to bring it on location shoots. The battery capacity is huge and I've never ran out of power. The light output is also amazing. I like to pose a model so I'm shooting directly into the sun and it over powers the sun without any problem. I use the Godox X1T-C trigger with this. It supports TTL and HSS. I normally shoot the AD600 through a white umbrella when on location as it's a lot easier than setting up a softbox.

Additional to the AD600, I use a Yongnuo 568EXii as a rim light. These speedlights are amazing and in my opinion a much more cost effective solution compared to Canon alternatives without losing out on quality light. I picked the 568's as they support HSS. I use the YN622C triggers with this.

4. Drone
I use the DJI Phantom 3 Pro drone. I shoot a lot of landscapes and this is perfect. It's more of a big boys toy because it's so much fun. I can't justify upgrading as I mainly use it for photography.

5. Additional Equipment
I take a Lenovo i7 laptop whenever I do a wedding. I like to edit a small amount of photos to send to the couple the same evening. It's handy for backing up my images on the go too.

I use a Samsung Galaxy tablet. This serves 2 functions: I use it as a screen for the drone and to review photos from my DSLR. The 6D has wifi so I can send photos directly to the tablet. It makes it much easier to see if you get a good shot. There's nothing worse than getting home, looking at the photos and realising you made some sill mistake.

For lighting I have 2 softboxes, an octagonal softbox as a main fill light and a strip softbox a rim light.

Anyway that's all! Thanks for stopping by! Let me know if you have any questions about the equipment, I have a lot of experience to share.

Cool kit! I have an old Canon 50mm f/1.4 myself, I use it all the time. It's a pretty solid lens to have in your bag.

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

Beast of a lens! Great for film making too!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

Nice! hey can you upvote my post? Im developer and i want to bring cool things in the posts

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

So cool you have a drone!!! Ugh... future me will get one... haha.

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

If you can afford to get one, I'd highly recommend it, so much fun! BTW I checked your profile, love the pics, followed!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

thats a nice bag full, but do you really always take that drone with you? Also have you never felt the need to get a second body to avoid situations where you have to change lenses in a hurry!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

If I'm doing an outdoor shoot, I always take the drone. I'm normally in really cool locations and I would regret not taking it. For example if I'm doing a paid photoshoot, I can then make additional money by selling landscape prints. I definitely need a second body. The Canon 6D mark 2 is just out. I'm waiting on the 6D to come down in price and buy another one. I normally just walk around weddings with my camera in one hand and another lens in the other.

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

So what kind of camera do you use with your drone?

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

The drone has an inbuilt camera with gimbal. I think it's the same sensor as the gopro hero 4 black. The picture quality is pretty decent and the video is 4k.

nice gear!

Amazing how simple your set up is. I when to a zoo in Tampa and had two different Sony camera bodies. I actually just used the A56 with a 70-200mm lens. I only used one but I had the other one in my back pack. Canon is a real workhorse of a camera.

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

I had a lot of different setups over the last few years but this is the one that I think suits me for every situation.

Unfortunately, I was never impressed with the Tamron lenses and they used to vignette like crazy on my 5D. I'm talking the image would be a circle.

I just picked up the new Zeiss 50mm F1.4 and am loving every second of it. I have a few lens tests up with models at the moment. I definitely recommend going for the Zeiss primes if you are ever deciding between upgrading to the L lenses or not.

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

That's mad about the vingnetting, I've never had a problem with the Tamron lenses. Thanks for the advice, I love your photos, just followed!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

Thank you :-) Yea it was insane. The last time I saw it I borrowed my 5D to another photographer and she was using one of her lenses. It was a circular photo. Great if you are doing art photography... not so good if you are working for a client.

Like you I started out with zooms. a 28-70 2.8L and a 70-200 2.8L. Those babies paid themselves off many times over through out the years. The standard zoom busted the morning after a wedding last year. I was sad to see the old lady go.

Thank you for sharing. I like lense 50mm. Agree 1.4 is perfectly

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

The 50mm is lovely. I started with a 50mm f/1.8, that was perfect for starting out, I can't fault that lens!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

Yes it's perfect but always want even better ) Good equipment!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

Thanks!

The extra memory card slot sounds like a good reason, but not good enough to spend that much more. I didn't know there were Canon cameras (for photo, not cinema) that had two memory card slots. It's very common in video: Our Sony camera has two slots and that comes handy for news reporting, we always leave one in and have two extra cards for swapping and editing. That way one can get the footage and start editing and uploading while the "main" memory card stays in for backup.

Also your Tamron lens looks amazing, very good value for the price. A zoom covering enough with a f/2.8 is what one would use for most situations.

I hope this kind of posts catch on. They're better than porn! I used to spend too much time in flickr groups circling this subject.

For everyday situations I myself like the Canon 40mm for everyday shooting. I like to move around, is not expensive and is what I'm used to. I'm thinking on the 50mm f/1.4 as un upgrade for the f/1.8 but I'm also curious about going mirrorless. I'll need the budget for either anyways...

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

For me, it's a good idea to have 2 card slots when doing a wedding in case one card fails. The Tamron lenses are amazing. I have used the canon equivalent and I can't see any noticeable difference myself. I know if you look into each pixel you will see a difference but I'm not looking to do that.

Moving from the 50mm1.8 to a 1.4 is definitely worth it. I however wouldn't move to mirrorless myself yet. If you have a mirrorless camera, you need about 5 batteries for a days work compared to one battery on canon.
Thanks for the comment, it's good to get a conversation going!

ย  ยท ย 8 years agoย

I've never looked at the mirrorless that way, I mean regarding the batteries. It's not that I want a mirrorless but I want a smaller camera. Also de Fuji ones look very cool, as well the Olympus, like the early 80s look of my Canon AE-1 (which does have a 50mm f/1.4 btw). I'm not a pro, I don't make a living out this so I can experiment a little without not being able to make rent.

I own a t3i I bought new and at a really good price a couple of years ago and at work we updated to an 80D, we use both for video most of the time.
