I moved to Key West Florida from Hilton Head Island in 1998. It was September 10th when I arrived.
I still had not even completely unpacked when Hurricane Georges slammed the tiny island.
It was a week Category 2 when it made landfall but it still crippled the island chain for months. We had no power for almost three weeks at the apartment complex.
I lived in West Isle Club apartments at the time and as it turned out it was one of the highest elevations on Key West.
I was fortunate enough to have a digital camera and a generator courtesy of the Broward County Sheriffs department.
I had a press pass for the Key West Citizen at the time and got the generator under the auspices that I was the only staff staying behind to report on the hurricane. They believed me and let me have one of the precious few they had.
Having the generator allowed me to upload pictures to the http://keywest.com website. At the time my partner and I owned the domain.
We were pretty popular at the time because no one was able to get any news out of the keys accept for through myself and Chris my business partner. We did phone interviews on CNN and the Weather Channel and several radio stations.
Hell even Jimmy Buffett called us to have us check on his home and recording studio.
I was fortunate enough to be able to archive the pictures and a few years ago I made a video of the pictures. Now that video is all I have left. The digital pics are gone. Erased with a crashed hard drive.
Well with Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 bearing down on the tiny island chain I thought it appropriate to bring this video out to everyone's attention.
KEEP IN MIND THESE ARE 1 MEGA PIXEL DIGITAL PICTURES SO THE QUALITY SUCKED.
