The baobab is a prehistoric species of tree, which predates both mankind, and the splitting of the continents over 200 million years ago. Baobabs are able to store water in their trunks during the rainy season, allowing them to produce fruit during the dry season, when all other plants will have dried up. They can store up to 120,000 litres of water in their trunks at one time.
Baobabs grow in 32 different African countries, and can live for up to 5,000 years. The baobab has become well known due to its unique silhouette. It was even featured in the hit Disney film The Lion King, as the tree where monkey Rafiki lived.
