Afternoon Walk: Steam Engine

A quick stop by the railroad depot at Mytäjäinen to clear my thoughts and grab a few pics. This place seems less interesting from a photographic point of view in the winter.

Are these taken today? We've lost the snow in the city centre because it's 0°C and wet. :(
I like photos with mist and trains, so these photos are looking good.

Yes, they were taken today at about 2:30 PM. It was about 0 C at the time. Unfortunately, I was pressed for time. I might go back next month to try and take better ones and more of them. Päijänne Tavastia normally has more snow than Pirkanmaa. I have taken the northern route via Padasjoki, Kuhmalahti and Sahalahti to drive between Lahti and Tampere many times. It is usually only when you come down from the slightly higher elevations of Kuhmalahti to Sahalahti when the snow cover starts to look thinner when driving toward Tampere. I'm guessing the reason for the usual greater snow depth in the Lahti region is greater precipitation because of greater proximity to a sea coast and the Salpausselkä I ridge formation spanning the entire region from east to west.

The place looks really freezing cold @markkujantunen. How are you coping?

Compliments!!!

I was having no difficulty whatsoever. Thanks for asking. It's a matter of dressing right. I had a winter jacket on and a beanie on my head. No gloves were needed. The temperature was at about 0 C. Not that cold. It starts getting uncomfortably cold only at about -30 C in regular winter clothing. When it's that cold, and it usually gets that cold for a week or so every year, spending any length of time outdoors makes it feel like somebody were pushing a pin cushion on your face. So, it's a good idea to wear a muffler you can wrap around the lower part of your face.

OK. Cool, stay warm during this season.

Believe it or not, but we do not spend the winter shivering from cold in this country. Our houses are properly insulated, have double or even triple glazing and practically all of them have decent heating systems in place. It's much worse in warmer countries that have some kind of a winter because in those countries they have not usually bothered to invest in insulation and heating in residential buildings because of the relative mildness and shortness of the winter. Take Mexico, for example. Everybody knows that Mexico is a hot country, right? Ten months out of twelve it is. But the winter in northern Mexico can be cold. It can go below freezing during winter nights. When that happens, the local residents will be freezing indoors. Our houses are at a constant 20-22 C all year round except for the hottest weeks in the summer.

OK. This is good to hear, because I was wondering how you people where coping with the cold.

WoW! great photography ... I really like the way you captured the winter and specially the Engine picture from the front view is amazing
