Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Metaponto is a small town in the province of Matera, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. Situated in front of the Jonic Coast, on the part of the Gulf of Taranto, it today is both a cultural and seaside destination.
Its foundation cites various hypotheses, including some legendary: one links it to the arrival of Mètabo, son of Sisifo who was King of Epiro; another links the arrival of Focesi by sea; and yet another links to the arrival of Pilesi veterans or legionaries from besieged Troy.
History is content to nominate the Achei and Leucippo peoples, who arrived by sea during the VIII century BC and founded the centres of Metaponto, Siris and Pandosia.
From the mid-8th century BC the arrival of Greek pottery at the location of Metaponto gives us evidence of wide-ranging trade. It was from the beginning of the 7th century, however, that the presence of permanent external groups, such as Greek merchants and craftsmen, created the basis for the foundation, at the beginning of the last quarter of the 7th century BC, of the Achaean colony of which ancient sources spoke.
Metaponto Archaeological Park preserves monuments which narrate the history of the site, from its foundation until the Roman era. This includes: the remains of the urban sanctuary dedicated to Apollo Licio (Lycian Apollo), the adjacent Agora (market/assembly square), the ceramic or Kerameikos district and a regular town plan consisting of long and narrow blocks, with a plateia (the main street).
In the sacred area, the main Doric temples have their own place: Heranion, Apollonion, Hera, Apollo Lykaiosc and Atena (Athena). The Agora hosts the semicircle theatre built on a previous circular one.
Tourists can still enjoy the beautiful "Tavole Palatine", that are the columns remaining from a Greek temple and date back to the 6th century before Christ; the temple was dedicated to the Goddess Hera.
Thing to see: The Metaponto Archaeological Park, Athena Temple, Apollo Temple, Hera Temple, Aphrodite Temple, Tavole Palatine, Agorà, Theatre, Antiquarium, Sacred Area, Necropolis, National Archaeological Museum, Metaponto Lido.

Those are remnants from Roman empire? If it is, the Romans seem to be born as natural mathematician and engineers! Amazing to see those architectures.

Awesome...i've been seeing that travole paletine on my computer, i never knew it is found in Italy.
The materials that were used to erect the temple must be very strong for the remains to remain up-to-date from 16th century.
