A panoramic view of Vigoleno (Author's photo - All rights reserved)

Ciao a tutti,
Hello everyone,
I began a Photo Journey through Italy. I will post one photo every day with a little note of explanation. I hope you like it!
Vigoleno is a small town of the Municipality of Vernasca, province of Piacenza, in the northern Italian region of Emilia Romagna. Perched on a rocky spur on the ridge separating the Ongina and Stirone valleys, Vigoleno is one of the most fascinating and full of history medieval villages in the Piacenza Province.
Vigoleno’s origins date back to the Roman era: the name derives from the Latin Vicus Lyaeo, a place dedicated to Bacchus because of the exquisite wines of the area.
Given the strategic importance of the territory on the border with Parma, were assumed to defensive structures since the roman age. The existence of the fortifications of Vigoleno, however, is testified for the first time in the XII century, when the village churches protection to the commune of Piacenza. Further defensive additions were ordered in 1306 by Alberto Scotti, the merchant family Scotti of Piacenza.
The fortified village has an elliptical layout, still extraordinarily complete and full of historical remnants, and it is surrounded by powerful embattled walls. A rampart walk runs along its imposing walls and you’ll find an amazing panoramic view of the Stirone river’s valley.
The village, still today it is accessed for the same port that over the centuries has seen soldiers, ladies and knights. Passed the entrance, you enter the piazza with its center at the sixteenth-century fountain. Next to it rises the Donjon, mighty quadrangular tower which dominates the surrounding landscape. On the east side of the square you’ll notice the external cistern, linked to the castle, used for centuries to satisfy the water needs of the population.
Located in front of the entrance of the castle there is the Oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie, elegant seventeenth century building, built on the ruins of an ancient hospitable for the faithful traveling along the Via Francigena.
Going eastwards, you reach the Parish Church of San Giorgio. The Church, among the most suggestive examples of Paduan Romanesque, preserves in the facade the valuable lunette of Saint George killing the dragon. The stones with golden hues of the houses in the village, show sometimes remains of fossil shells that recall a time very far in which the whole area was covered by the waters of the sea.
Since 2002, it has been certified as one of the "Most beautiful villages in Italy" and Italian Touring Club gave it a special Orange Flag. The area is also on the path of the "Via Francigena".
Thing to see: the Medieval Village, the Parish Church of San Giorgio, the Oratory of the Madonna delle Grazie, the Donjon, the town Walls, the Museum of the Orsanti, the Museum of the Donjon.

Wow...wouldn't mind 10 photos from you every day too. If you don't mind me saying, I'd love to see more wide angle photos of the beautiful places and landscapes you are photographing. 17 mm wide at 1.5/1.6 crop factor should be enough for a wide viewing angle.
I'd love to the the photos less congested and with more breathing space.
