Buffalo is a ruminant animal that became a cattle for many nations of the world, especially Asia. This animal is the domestication of the wild buffalo (the Indians call it arni) that can still be found in the areas of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Vietnam, China, Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, and Thailand.


Currently the wild buffalo population in Asia is starting to decline and it is feared in the future there will be no wild buffalo population that can be found. Adult buffalo can weigh about 300 kg to 600 kg. Wild buffalo can weigh more, wild female buffalo can weigh up to 800 kg and male wild buffalo can weigh up to 1200 kg. The average weight of a male buffalo is 900 kg and the average height on the shoulders of the buffalo is 1.7 meters.


One feature that distinguishes wild buffaloes from pet buffalo is that the pet buffalo has a round belly. With the mixing of breeds between buffaloes between different populations, the weight of buffaloes may vary.

The classification of buffalo is still uncertain, but Bubalus bubalis is commonly grouped into three types:

Wild buffalo (B. bubalis arnee), ancestor of river buffalo
The river buffalo (B. bubalis bubalis) originating from South Asia.
Buffalo buffalo (B. bubalis carabauesis) originating from Southeast Asia.


The swamp buffalo ancestor is no longer found wildly, but it is known that the marsh buffalo genome consists of 24 pairs of chromosomes, while the river buffalo has 25 pairs of chromosomes. The descendants of crosses of these two children can be found and they can produce offspring (fertil). Buffaloes can not cross-breed with cows that have 60 chromosomes, though still included in the same child Bovinae.

Milk from buffalo is widely used by humans. For example as Mozzarella cheese ingredients. Buffalo meat is also the main export product in India. Nevertheless buffalo meat is less favored in Asia because of its violence. Buffalo leather is often used as a shoe material, shadow puppets, and motorcycle helmets.
