My Orchid Plant in Bloom. Today's Photos.

in photography •  8 years ago

Though this is not the season for orchids to bloom, I have a few plants which are indigenous to our land, and one of them has started blooming. This plant, from the dendrobium family and found naturally in Sikkim, is a hardy plant which can withstand the extremes of nature, and flowers just about anytime when the weather is conducive!

Sikkim is known for its orchids and we have around 500 local varieties which have been exploited commercially to make hybrids by crossing it with varieties from other lands. In fact, a lot of the hybrids found in the world today, maybe linked back to one ancestor here in Sikkim.

I have been watching this plant for a few days now, and with the sunny days we've had in a row, the buds started opening up. And today I noticed it had a few full size flowers. I snapped some pictures in different location today as the plant is in a pot which could be moved around.

Very nice post that we would love to include in the Gardening Trail category. Here's our full guidelines.

I actually learned about this in my last post. I have started using the gardening tags nows and will be making posts with it as the main one. I have now read the guidelines and shall post accordingly, but I do appreciate this initiative and what you guys are doing. Thanks again.

They sure are pretty and have such a 3-dimensional structure, like a sculpture! Do they have any scent?

They are indeed spectacular! And it does have a faint scent which you will have to go close to realise.
