A Tale of Two Birds

in photography •  6 years ago  (edited)

I have heard that some tribes pronounce "birds" as "boyds". I wonder who they are; probably folk from the colonies.

Anyway.

I don't often photograph birds, and I'm not very good at it either. It is not my thing, as the vocabularily challenged would say.

Taking photos of birds also requires longer lenses than I usually carry, and I have become too lazy to lug that sort of big and heavy things around.

Having said that, yesterday I fluked two passable shots of birds. First, one of a European robin (Erithacus rubecula), roodborstje in Dutch:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/400s

And then one of a great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major), grote bonte specht in Dutch:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/320s

It was being noisy, hammering away at a tree, and annoying as well, as it insisted on keeping the tree between itself and me for most of the time. I got a shot in the end, though.

Here's an older photo (from too far away, or taken with too short a lens) of a black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), zwarte specht in Dutch, for comparison:

Olympus Stylus 1s, 300mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/60s

It is different; it is black.

Thanks for watching!

Sort Order:

I heard the red one on Sunday
I hunted it between the trees but no luck
lucky you to get to spot that guy !

So much noise, red feathers, and still difficult to spot. I wonder how they do it.

yeah .. I thought I was heading for the right tree
then I heard it on the other side

I pronounce it like that. Grew up in Brooklyn. Want to make something about it. lol

Yes. It sounds silly 8-P.

The robin is a lot more shy on mainland Europe compared to the island of Britain. The woodpeckers I've only seen clearly on visits to Poland, although I have heard them about here. Very good photos of both!

Thank you. There aren't as many great spotted woodpeckers in the north of Scotland as in the rest of the UK, so you may have to swim elsewhere for a look.

Yeah. I mostly heard them in the woods around Bristol when I lived there for a few years.

Love the shot of the woodpecker. I dont think I have ever seen one in the wild. We do get plenty of Robin's though, I spotted one just a few days ago.

Bird photos are difficult. Even when they appear to be sitting still there is a lot of movement happening! Great shots!

Thank you!

Also, they almost always seem to be too far away for the camera I carry, whichever one I carry 8-).

Hey, I use 'thing' a lot, it covers a lot of ground. Then again, look where I live...
(Your self-touted mediocre bird shots put many I see to shame. And I've been meaning to ask, can I use your EuroRobin photo, in a post, if I ever get around to it? You know how likely that might be...but I gotta ask).

Yes, you can.
