As we were having a look around St. Martin's Cathedral (better known as the Dom Church) in Utrecht, The Netherlands, we were being watched from above by strange creatures:

These gargoyles are found on old churches all over Europe. They often have a spout designed to convey water away from the side of a building, but their shapes traditionally illustrate evil; they provided images and symbolism for a largely illiterate population.
They still look slightly scary today.
It took some doing to get rid of the perspective distortion you get from photographing upwards, but I think I pulled it off.

the Moss on these ones really adds to their character and yes scary feel which I gues sis part of what they were designed for
Even though we have some on a couple of buildings here in NYC they do not have the same character and feel as those in Europe

In the city where I live there's not gargoyles, because every church here is in romanesque style (older than gothic), but there are some gargoyle (even if in different style ^_^) in the Dome in Florence:
