Levitated Mass - What it's like to have a 340-ton Bolder Above You

in photography •  8 years ago  (edited)

If you ever visit the LACMA near DTLA you'll see one of the most fascinating installations are on the actual grounds. In 2012 an amazing 340-ton rock sculpture was planted between cement pillars. This took nearly 11 days to complete and traveled 105 miles from it's shipping container.

Being able to stand below this gigantic rock is pretty amazing and feeling this huge mass floating above you. It was incredible to see this in person up-close. The metal plates where specially engineered for seismic activity that can happen and most likely not a place you'd want to be to test the theory.

This is craziness! I love the idea though! I worry about the safety of it hahah.

Gosh, this piece caused quite a stir! I remember arguing with people about why or why not it is a good piece of art. I say fuck it, I think its cool to walk under a huge rock! I also think its cool to go out and do it in nature. We are so disconnected from the marvels this world has to offer that we rely on experiences like this to bring us back. I think its an eye opener for sure.

thats awesome !

That's nice there is a big rock and it's awesome about difference view from inside and under that rock :)

great!
Really unusual installation.
I do not know why. But I was reminded of mysterious places on the planet where gravity is broken.

Oh yeah I've heard of those places. Some areas are devoid of all animal life as the vibes keep them away from these places.

very cool!

The first image made me think:
"You're an earth-bender Mary."
(Harry Potter theme plays. Yes i know her name is most likely not Mary.) '3
