DECEMBER ROADRUNNER II

in photography •  6 years ago

This reminds me of last year.

Last year, as I was heading out of the area, I came across a roadrunner in December. Originally thinking that they were only hot-weathered, desert birds (thank you Warner Brothers) I was surprised to first see them in Arkansas, and then even more so to see them in December. Click here to see the my photo shoot from last year.

Anyway, these birds are rather quick, but since they like to hide in the bushes, you don't always realize that they are there. Most likely, they see us coming and use their speed to hide before we even can catch a glimpse of them. Can you find the roadrunner in the photo above?

I was trying to capture a good angle between the bushes as the roadrunner darted along, but I soon realized I would not be able to produce the photos that I was looking for. After all, I had my regular lens on the camera and was in my truck, stopped on the gravel road. Soon, I switched things up to increase my odds of capturing some better photos.

Eventually I was able to photograph the bird in a satisfactory manner. Moreover, I finished up just before the first vehicle came by, so it was perfect timing. Interestingly enough, this may actually be the same roadrunner from last December. I'm not sure, but it was in the same area. The photos below are my other favorites. Enjoy!

I have to say that the thing that surprised me about the Roadrunner was how tiny it was. I blame that on Wonder Brothers because he looked like the size of an ostrich. Anyway I just don't believe when they told me that was a roadrunner.

The joke was on me. Great shots!

I was thinking of that too. These guys are way smaller than ostriches!

Howdy sir papa-pepper! I love those guys! we have a pair of them that patrol our property, they mate for life. But I thought we were as far North as they come because they do prefer the hotter, dryer dessert conditions but I love to watch them, super fast and I've always had a hard time catching good photos of them but you did excellent! (big surprise)

Yeah, we've got four or five of them on our drive back to civilization. Amazing creatures to check out.

¡Gracias!

With my token picture that is what Willie was been chasing since my youth, and he is still running free,

LOL - Thanks for pointing that out! Even with mentioning it briefly above, I still may have missed that.

We Love Our RoadRunners in Arizona too PAPA....................

LOL - I saw that coming.

Thanks for the #sf4t sub too!

Good shots, Mate!....:)...

BEEP! BEEP!

...and they are actually related to cuckoos... how's that for a crazy fact? :)

I hope to someday see a real, live RoadRunner. Yeah, my first time to know that there is a bird as RoadRunner was from cartoons of arner Brothers. Your photos are the closest I have been. So very interesting. And excellent photos, @papa-pepper! Have a beautiful day, my friend.
