Inside a C-130, by Pete Washburne

C130 Yap.JPG

Being a musician and playing music has taken me all over the world. This photo was taken when I was playing in the US Navy Band, and I think this is on our way to or from Yap, a Pacific Island known for its stone money. This view is from inside a US Air-force C-130, in which we flew on this adventure. It was a huge lumbering, rattling, noisy, shaky ride, one which I will never forget, and in fact, this wasn't the only time I had to fly in one of those. On another occasion, we had to fly from Panama to Quito, Ecuador, and thence to Esmerelda, and we flew in one of these planes. I'm sure there were a few others. Another memory, likely from this particular trip, was how the crew produce something called "Sea Rations", which were a type of food, if it didn't have maggots, which existed before the days of "MREs", or "Meals Ready to Eat". These were meals that were actually unfit to eat, although we used those cool little can openers on the cans of maggots, I think maybe it's called a PF 15 or something similar. This photo was taken by our bass player, Pete, who's a damn good picker, one of the best, and he's got some sort of weird magic going on here with the lightning coming from the opening of the plane, I'm not sure what it is. But hey, I'm sitting in the middle of the photo, the one on the left with a beard.
