Des Moines: The Pearl of the Midwest
Just kidding. I don't think anyone calls it that. However, there are plenty of photographic gems to be found if you dive into some of the city parks here. Gray's Lake, situated just southwest of downtown, is a 100 acre lake circled by a two-mile rec trail.
Gaylord E. Grey originally used the lake to quarry sand and gravel. There are a few remnants of this operation still standing.
There are boat and bicycle rentals. In the evening, you can usually see someone taking sailing lessons.
My favorite part of the park is the walking bridge that spans the lake. It looks fantastic when it is lit at night. I had trouble taking night pictures because the sun was up.
Thanks for looking!
