What does it feel like to have a library in your city that is free to access, has 23 million reasons to visit it from books to manuscripts and music and is housed in a architecturally beautiful building. And what does it feel like to enter its majestic but sagely reading room that has a distinct and heady smell of books accompanied by 'green lampshades like fireflies" as someone from the Boston Globe once described the array of reading lamps. You are affected by a momentary greed to read even if you are not an avid reader. The Bates Hall at the Boston Public Library.
