Cyrtanthus elatus, also known as the George lily or red lily, is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaryllidaceae. It is native to South Africa, where it grows in grasslands and rocky areas. The plant produces a cluster of narrow, strap-shaped leaves up to 60 cm long, and tall spikes of bright red or orange-red flowers that can reach up to 1 m in height. The flowers are trumpet-shaped with six petals and a central trumpet-shaped corona. Cyrtanthus elatus is a popular garden plant and is often grown for its striking flowers. It requires a sunny position in well-drained soil and is relatively easy to grow. It is propagated by seed or by dividing clumps of bulbs. In addition to its ornamental value, Cyrtanthus elatus has also been used in traditional medicine for a variety of ailments, including stomach disorders, respiratory infections, and headaches. However, it should be noted that the plant contains toxic alkaloids and should not be ingested without proper preparation and dosage.
