Visiting Amsterdam during the Gay Parade 2016

I traveled with my family to Amsterdam this weekend and we had an awesome time! It was Amsterdam Gay Pride/EuroPride 2016.

Traveling to Amsterdam

First we got on a bus to go to the train station. Taking public transportation is not difficult in Holland but can get expensive if you dont know there is a chip card you can buy for bus and train transportation. Then we got on a train to go to Amsterdam Centraal. What I enjoyed the most in the train ride is the views. I took some pictures while on the train which you can see below.

The scenery is very green because in Holland it tends to rain a lot. In fact, Holland, or the Netherlands is located under sea level, hence its' name :)

As soon as we arrived to Amsterdam Centraal, there was music with a group of people playing drums. Other people dressed up ready for the parade or just having fun in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam was filled with people in all the streets, especially the canals, where the parade would be held. What I enjoyed most about walking the streets was the spirit of the people, how nice everyone was with each other and to each other. I was so happy to see everyone getting along.

(I wish I had a better way to work with pictures to include as many pictures as possible in my post without making them huge or make it seem like all you see is pictures, but I do feel like a picture many times can tell much more than words can.)

Some awesome people we found to take pictures of, or take pictures with. Everyone so friendly!

Amsterdam Gay Pride Canal Parade

The streets to the canal were so filled with people, on the streets, on the bridges, in the houses, on boats...especially on boats! It was hard to get a "good spot" especially, when we were'nt even sure what time the parade was. We asked a few people who also had no idea. Some people were just enjoying themselves with some beer and listening to loud music. I have never seen so many people in Amsterdam before...it is hard to put into words, so here are the pictures to grasp just a bit of an idea.

Now even without the parade the atmosphere was great. Lots of friendly people, lots of music, nice friendly people. The weather was even pleasant. Some people were dancing on their boats to their own music waiting for the parade.

I have included some short clips of the parade I videotaped. I have never inserted videos before so i hope it works! (please accept my apologies if it doesnt work) Otherwise here are the links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7p8six70A0

Some of the main messages shared by the boats and by the Gay Parade were:

  • Discriminatie= Discrimination which was crossed off meaning no discrimination
  • We all share the same Dreams
  • It's never too late to be you
  • Use condoms

Overall it was a fun day with awesome people, gay, lesbian, transexual, whatever they may be, we are all people and as such we all are the same and should be treated the same. That message was felt in Amsterdam on Saturday August 6th, 2016.

We later went on a boat ride, but I would have to write another post for that, so as not to make this one too long. Thank you Amsterdam for that wonderful experience!
