Re-post-process Old Photos From a While Back - Shanghai

in photography •  8 years ago

It is interesting to go through one's old works to see how one has evolved or changed since then. Today I was going through some old photos I took in 2009, and decided to re-process a certain HDR image. This was shot in Shanghai at the Shanghai Yuyuan Garden. Originally the edit used 6 exposures, in the new version I used only 4 out of the 6. The photos were shot at 10mm at f/8.

It's still not up to my current standards, but I think it is a lot better than the old version. The old version exhibits a lot of ugly halos around high contrast areas, and was too dark for my taste. I also made verticals straight and cropped the image. Overall, I think an improvement over the old.

Haha I've been there!

Nice work! I actually think the bridge section in the first image looks a bit better, but the buildings and people look much nicer in the second rendering. HDR is something I've briefly dabbled in but really need to do more research and practice.

Thanks, my style in HDR has shifted to representing the photo more realistically as the eye would've seen it. I think that looks more pleasing.

This is nice and subtle for HDR. I think the old one didn't go far enough to look different from a normal shot. This one is just right. It doesn't have that surreal look that most HDR photos have. It looks more like the way your eyes would perceive the scene in terms of dynamic range - most HDR photos look nothing like that.

Thanks, yeah I didn't know what I really wanted to express back then, nowadays I try to process HDR photos as how you described: just the way your eyes would see it.
