Dear friends,
here are some impressions of the current floods in my hometown Bonn due to the high water of the river Rhine. I took them yesterday evening on the eastern riverside in a district called Bonn-Beuel.

hier sind ein paar aktuelle Impressionen von den Überschwemmungen durch das Rhein-Hochwasser in Bonn. Ich habe die Fotos gestern Abend am östlichen Rheinufer in Bonn-Beuel aufgenommen.
As you can see, the riverside promenade is almost flooded and the trees sink in water.
Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist die Uferpromenade fast vollständig überschwemmt und die Bäume versinken in den Fluten.
Here is a flagpole by the local boatmen club. In the background to the right you can see the (bluely illuminated) opera building.
Hier seht ihr einen Fahnenmast des Beueler Schiffer-Vereins. Im Hintergrund rechts kann man die (blau angestrahlte) Bonner Oper erkennen.
There is a flood marker, where you can see the level of 8 metres. This morning the level already reached 8,20 m, but experts expect the peak today. The highest level of 10,13m had been reached at X-mas 1993 and 9,50m is the height of the floodwall at this place.
Es gibt dort einen Pegelstandsanzeiger, an dem man gut den Pegel von 8 Metern ablesen kann. Heute Morgen lag der Pegel schon bei 8,20 m und Experten erwarten den Scheitelpunkt heute im Laufe des Tages. Der bisherige Höchststand wurde mit 10,13 m zu Weihnachten 1993 erreicht. Die Wasserschutzmauer ist an dieser Stelle 9,50 m hoch.
We are at river kilometre 654 of the appr. 1,230 km (760 mi) long Rhine here. Nearly in the middle.
Wir befinden uns hier bei Flusskilometer 654 des insgesamt 1.232 km langen Rheins. Also etwa in der Mitte.
Right in front of the flagpole is a statue of John of Nepomuk, a Catholic saint and protector from floods and drowning. Here is a front picture, in case you were wondering.
Direkt gegenüber des Fahnenmastes steht die Statue von St. Johannes von Nepomuk, ein katholischer Heiliger und Beschützer vor der Flut und dem Ertrinken. Hier könnt ihr ihn von vorne sehen, falls es euch interessiert.
Here is the opera building again. You can see, that the landing pier of the small ferry called "Rheinnixe" (Rhine mermaid) has also been flooded.
Hier noch einmal die Bonner Oper. Wie ihr sehen könnt, ist der Schiffsanleger der kleinen Fähre "Rheinnixe" komplett überschwemmt.
This ferry usually connects the two riversides.
Die Fähre verbindet normalerweise die beiden Flussufer.
But a few hours ago, the shipping traffic had been closed down completely.
Aber der Schiffsverkehr wurde vor ein paar Stunden komplett eingestellt.
This is a view near the Kennedy Bridge. As you can imagine, the water level is too high to shoot under the bridge. I wonder, that the streetlights are still in operation.
Hier seht ihr im Hintergrund die Kennedybrücke. Man kann sich vorstellen, dass der Wasserstand zu hoch ist, um unter der Brücke herzufahren. Ich finde es erstaunlich, dass die Laternen noch in Betrieb waren, obwohl sie im Wasser stehen.
Here is the same place from a few metres behind. You can see the guys of the THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), checking if the flood-gates are consistent.
Hier ist die selbe Stelle von ein paar Metern Entfernung aufgenommen. Ihr könnt die Jungs vom THW (Technisches Hilfswerk) erkennen, die die Fluttore ständig auf ihre Dichtheit prüfen.
It was a bit difficult to photograph because of the low light. So almost all of the photos were made using long exposure (between 0.5 and 3.5 seconds). I used my Canon Rebel T5i with the kit lense.
Es war insgesamt ziemlich schwierig zu fotografieren, weil es schon ziemlich dunkel war. Ich musste daher relativ lange Belichtungszeiten (zwischen 0,5 und 3,5 Sekunden) wählen. Fotografiert habe ich mit meiner Canon 700D mit Kit-Optik.
Afterwards I tried to be a bit creative with the post processing. The tree is my favorite image from the series.

I somehow missed this movie, but just found out, that they used Sodium-vapor lamps to achieve the look.
Maybe the film inspired the naming of this German band, which I happen to like a lot.

Cool, that you like them, too :-) They started their career as an English singing Indie-band, but then suddenly decided to change style and language. Especially the songs of their "Weißes Papier" album are really very strong. I was looking for some English translations of their lyrics, but most of the time they are not that good. Disaster never looked more beautiful. There are some wonderful shots with the dreamlike quality I'm often seeking. Really great, I couldn't pick a favorite. The view near the Kennedy bridge would also look good in a darker B/W version.

Haha, thanks a lot for your appreciation :-) People living near the river are kind of used to it and for example have no basement or ground-floor in their houses. Also the construction of the floodwall really helps a lot. But I also hope, that the water is going back before there will be severe damages.

Da ich alles persönlich kenne, was du fotografiert hast, freue ich mich an deinen kreativen Veränderungen. Der Baum ist so ein wirklicher Blickfang im real doch eher grau braun schmutzigem Hochwassergeschehen. Es steigt jedes Jahr mehr oder weniger hoch. Ich möchte an die Begradigungen erinnern, die Abschnitte des Rheinlaufs betrafen, um ihn „verkehrstauglich“ zu machen und zur Schiffahrtsstrasse auszubauen.

Freut mich, eine weitere Steemerin aus der Gegend kennenzulernen :-) Es stimmt, dass durch Begradigungen und Bebauung der Auen das Hochwasserproblem insgesamt eher schlimmer geworden ist. Vielleicht hat es auch mit dem Klimawandel zu tun. Zum Glück ist das Jahrhunderthochwasser am Rhein (1993) aber auch schon ein paar Jahre her und vor allem durch den Bau der Hochwassermauer in Beuel und die Verstärkung des Damms sind größere Schäden zuletzt ausgeblieben.

Ich komme aus Kerpen ( Michael Schuhmacher Card Bahn ). Das ist schön,das welche direkt um die Ecke wohnen.

Thanks for your feedback! I got my Canon about half a year ago, but I had a Canon 1000D before, so it was not that hard to get used to it. I postprocess most of the photos, I shoot, using Adobe Lightroom. Especially letting some colours pop out, often really makes the difference.

Hat es viele Versuche gebraucht, bis die Belichtungszeit gestummen hat? Mit der Beleuchtungszeit habe ich die grössen Mühe, diese auf Anhieb richtig einzustellen.:-)
Ich hoffe das Wasser hat sich wieder etwas gelegt. Zum glück war bei uns kein Hochwasser, nur ein paar umgekippte Tannen.

Danke für das Lob. Heute soll der Scheitelpunkt des Hochwasser erreicht werden und Dank der Hochwassermauer ist alles weitaus weniger dramatisch als noch in früheren Jahren.
Ich hatte gar nicht so viel Zeit, die Belichtung richtig einzustellen. Habe mal mit 3,5 Sekunden angefangen und mich dann runtergearbeitet... Ich kann aber auch einges in der Postproduktion "retten".

Das klingt doch schon mal sehr vielversprechend, dann solltet ihr über dem Berg sein.
Das glaube ich, die Feuerwehr hat hier einiges dazugelernt, was die Bekämpfung und vorallem Vorbeugung von Hochwasser angeht.
Achso, also hast du einfach aus dem Bauch raus mal 3.5 eingestellt und dann angefangen dich hinzutasten. Macht sinn:)

Ja genau, so habe ich's gemacht :-) Aber ich habe die Kamera auch noch nicht so lange, so dass ich da noch relativ viel herumexperimentieren muss. Ich hatte nicht einmal ein Stativ, aber ich konnte die Kamera immerhin auf der Hochwassermauer ablegen.

Es ist wieder soweit. Ich glaube fast jedes Jahr ist eine Überschwemmung am Rhein. Auch in Wiesbaden, wo der Fluss durchläuft, ist das gleich oft zu sehen. Da sind ganze Tiefgaragen völlig Unterwasser. Warum man da so genau hat... frag mich nicht- Die Architekten waren nicht schlau genug. Weiß man doch, dass es immer wieder passiert. Wer dann trotz alle dem es so baut dass alles unter Wasser ist, dem ist nicht zu helfen und hat einen falschen Beruf erlernt...

Haha, den Schreck kann ich mir bildlich vorstellen. Das Rheinwasser drückt hier sogar einige km vom Rhein entfernt das Grundwasser so hoch, so dass sich auf den Wiesen Teiche bilden.

Grandiose Bilder hast du da gemacht! Als ich den Text gelesen habe, musst ich an das Hochwasser von 1998 denken - da hab ich in KöWi direkt untem am Rhein (über dem Chinarestaurant) im alten Düsseldorfer Hof (waren da aber schon Wohnungen und nicht mehr Hotel) gewohnt... musste zwei Wochen lang über Stege in die zweite Etage.... Ja, wir haben auch ein paar Jahre in Beuel direkt am Rhein gewohnt und dort gab es sogar eine zweite Eingangstür in der ersten Etage, falls das Hochwasser das Erdgeschoss überspült. Zum Glück sind wir davon aber verschont geblieben ;-) LG zurück!

Ich auch ✊Zum einen soll es ja bald eine bessere Art des Content-Filterns geben, indem man bestimmten Interessen (bzw. "Communities") folgen kann, zum anderen sind wir alle als Kuratoren gefragt, um qualitativ minderwertigen Content herauszufiltern. Aber ich hoffe auch eher auf gleichmäßiges und stetiges Wachstum; das vereinfacht es, die Neulinge entsprechend aufzuklären.

Ich glaube es gibt jetzt schon etliche tote User aufgrund von der langen verifizierungszeit und weil der einstieg meiner Meinung nach echt nicht leicht ist, dadurch viele schnell aufgeben. :S Aber wie du bereits gesagt hast. Vor allem die alten Hasen haben die Macht dazu einen ordentlich Beitrag zu der Entwicklung von Stemmit zu leisten.
