Caterpillars use fake eyes to confuse birds (In my backyard)

in photography •  8 years ago  (edited)

This bad-boy was munching away on our backyard (London, Ontario) a couple of years ago.

The fake eyes are an evolutionary adaptation to confuse birds into thinking there are multiple critters watching them. Either way, they can eat a large plant leaf in about 30 minutes, and they won't stop eating.

Thank you :)

Yes, it was amazing to watch this little guy eat so fast. If you hold them up to light, they are a transparent green liquid. An amazing life form.

Glad you enjoyed it!

What beautifull creatures they are amazing fotos indeed.

wow like this :)

Glad you enjoyed!

Hi @steemike
Nice photos, the caterpillar certainly has good camouflage, and beautiful colors, just a pity that they can ruin a plant very quickly.

Hi @rynow, really glad you enjoyed it. Nature seems filled with beautiful creatures capable of inflicting large-scale destruction. :)
