TimTravels - City of Amsterdam Part 1

in photography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Welcome my dear Steemian friends to a new episode of TimTravels

As you might have noticed I was away the last days. I'm finally back with a lot of new pictures from my recent journey. Sit back and relax the beauty of Amsterdam!

What is your personal experience with Amsterdam?

The first time I was in Amsterdam was because of the Steem Fest. It was such a great time and left Amsterdam with good memories. I decided to visit Amsterdam again with my love and show her what I saw.

Let me tell you one thing, 200 Steemians make Amsterdam a great place! Now it is time to show you the city through my lens.

Attention, look closely at the letters: I am steem

Do you know where the first Steem Fest took place? It was the Volkshotel. Literally one of the hotels I have been to. This place is simply crazy. They have a sauna on the roof, you can cut your hair there, a nice restaurant with panorama view, designer rooms, great parties and much, much more!

You guys know what this room is? Feels pretty oldschool to be Steemits first generation

Remember this place? Congratulations, you are one of the lucky Steemians! Enough from our hotel, it's time to get out and show you some Amsterdam! XXX

That's pretty much Amsterdam in a nutshell. Bicycles. Wherever you are you will see them and trust me, they drive insanely. Driving a car within Amsterdam makes no sense since it's a small city and parking spaces for cars are rare

Here is our bike!

(

Flower shop of the world

But there is more besides Dutch cheese, bicycles and flowers. Wonderful canals with many ships and stunning buildings

At night we went to a roof to take some pictures from there. This was by far the best view I had this day and look at the sunset. Natures best cinema experience

Tomorrow part two will follow with more impressions of Amsterdam! @roelandp thank you so much for making the SteemFest possible. Can't wait for Lissabon!

Yours,
Tim

There's a lot of bike use here.
It looks so good.

Hello, @timsaid
Until recently, the Netherlands' capital was something of a work-in-progress, its world-class art museums – among them the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk museum of modern art and the Van Gogh Museum – shuttered for ambitious renovations that temporarily shifted the focus away from the city's rich artistic heritage towards its sleazy, hedonistic side. Although Amsterdam's clubs, bars and nightlife, and the notorious Red Light District, are as vibrant as ever, now that the bandages are off it can revel once more in its unique status as one of Europe's most diverse and boundary-pushing destinations - a place that should feature on every discerning weekend-breaker's hit-list. Whether you're looking to sample Amsterdam's best restaurants, chill out in one of its weed-touting coffeeshops, pound the cobbled streets for one-off shopping finds, or bed down in one of our recommended hotels, this guide should equip you with everything you need to immerse yourself in a city that revels in high and low culture.

Compared to London or Paris, Amsterdam used to be like a kid brother who didn't want to grow up; it was a playground where all involved were guaranteed a good time. In terms of things to do, Amsterdam assails you from all angles, managing to be all things to all people, depending on where you go.

First things first: the Red Light District. Despite the best efforts of the legislators, it remains a drug paradise for stoner backpackers. It's also a bottomless well of live sex and no-holes-barred porn for stag parties. And it's a sleazy, subterranean warren of darkrooms for S&M gay men. Phew!
In the Museum Quarter, thanks to the high-profile re-openings of the famous Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk museum of modern art and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam is once again a grade-A destination for international art and architecture connoisseurs.
Museumplein itself is actually not really an authentic Amsterdam square, but it does have plenty of grass, a wading pool that adjoins a skating ramp and several pleasant cafés.

Of course, Amsterdam continues to look good on a postcard (or Instagram), largely thanks to its 400-year-old waterways, which are criss-crossed with a host of bridges that outnumber those in Venice. A word on those famous canals: Singel was the medieval city moat; other canals such as Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, which follow its line outwards, were part of a Golden Age renewal scheme for the rich.

The connecting canals and streets, originally home to workers and artisans, have a number of cafés and shops. Smaller canals worth seeking out for the purposes of pottering include Leliegracht, Bloemgracht, Egelantiersgracht, Spiegelgracht and Brouwersgracht.

Less explored but up-and-coming suburbs include Oost, currently undergoing something of a foodie renaissance, Noord, on the far bank of the IJ where the EYE Film Institute has recently relocated, and even the Bijlmermeer, a concrete '60s experiment that houses immigrant factories, which comes alive with summer's Kwakoe festival and is now getting some groovy galleries exploring the area's unique heritage.

Whichever way the wind happens to be blowing on your visit, one thing's for certain: Amsterdam will continue to grow, as it has done since 1200, whether literally or metaphorically.

Thank you. @

love amsterdam great post bro

Great post @timsaid , and some great photos! (Don't know why I found that seagull image so hilarious :P)

Long been thinking that Amsterdam (or Leiden) will be my next destination after Paris. Especially with most jobs at the European Space Agency being at ESTEC (European Space Research and Technology Centre), it seems likely to happen :)

Looking forward to seeing more pictures!

Beautiful photos! I love the night photography

Wow, those photos of travel place are really awesome. Hope to travel there someday.

Damn, I love Amsterdam. Wonderful photos too.

I visited Amsterdam last year and absolutely loved it. My plan since then has been to make enough money to move there permanently. You're absolutely right about those bikes too.

Amsterdam is a wonderful city but it's designed to empty your wallet. Use air bnb and don't trust strangers!

Well done post thanks for sharing

Amsterdam looks stunning. It has to be near the top of every "most beautiful cities" list ever. I've always wanted to visit and your pictures make it look as good as I imagine.

Wow you have put Amsterdam on my bucket list, for that sir i thank you.

Great pictures! already want to go to Amsterdam

nice as always @timsaid

Wow awesome post dear, nd how u.
. Full steem ahead lets steemit... Steemit first supercars blogger said hello if you like super heavy cars checkout our blog

Someday I will have the opportunity to travel to that place In the meantime I will save.

If for some reason I can not save enough I would cry But I would have saved money :)

I'm sure you will be successful. Good luck

Fantastic, I was wondering where you ran off to :-) I don't even need to say it, but another set of beautiful pictures. Your point of view when taking them help portray the mood at the moment. I love it.

So, lets say you put your black bicycle in the bike area in the morning - how the hell would you find it when you come back mid-day in that sea of identical looking bikes? At least with cars you can set off the alarm by remote to find it and do the walk of shame over to the honking vehicle. lol Which brings me to the flower bike, reminds me of the steampunk looking bike from Paris. Soon you can do coffee table book of strange bicycles from around the world.

Very nice Tim, Looking forward to Part 2: Magic Truffles.

The city of Amsterdam is the city of my dreams, someday I will definitely vacation there for his support @timsaid

Hi @timsaid such beautiful scenery photos. I always enjoy your post

Oh that view... it possessed my freaking soul. Nicely done shots!

Did you take some cheese with you? Or otherwise you'll make Henry Willig feel sad!
Omg it's a bikemargeddon! Wait actually... it makes sense. There are like narrow streets, channels and boats.

No cheese at all :( we forgot that in all that excitement

Amazing post and the pictures were really cool, had no idea Amsterdam was so beautiful.
And wow....all those bikes😊 a lot...lol

It is just another spam bot putting the same comment under just about everything tagged "photography".

Good shots, BTW!

I thought so. Bots never get bored. Thanks :)

Excellent photos friend very good post thanks for sharing it with all of us

These are beautiful pics. But Amsterdam is also famous for something else that you haven't captured here. Maybe next time!!

The picture of that seagull though! Mine?

You have an interesting photographic 'eye'. Your choice of photos is unusual, but it actually picks up that intangible quality of a city that makes it distinctive - culture! By the way, I love all the bikes, that's quite incredible, but ... tyhe Steem

These are beautiful pictures encapsulating the city of Amsterdam as a whole. What i find most fascinating are the views at dusk.

Amsterdam is so lovely, I have been there twice, every time is exploring me.

Amazing pictures!

Hi friends.. Please follow and upvote me yah..thanks

Can I ask, what are magic truffels? Did you try one :) Your pics are beautiful - looks like a great place to visit.

The bar looks amazing! I am looking forward to steem fest 2! Although Amsterdam is a very cool destination I'm happy it is in Lisbon this year since it is cheaper. I hope more people decide to go there because of it.

Amsterdam is awesome. Had a hitchhiking trip from Estonia to Amsterdam couple years ago. I was travelling solo but still had heaps fun and made many good friends in Amsterdam.

Love the bicycles culture there. I've heard there is more bicycles in the city than there are people and it's almost legal to steal a bike. :D

Great stuff, keep on posting!

If you are staying at the volkshotel (Wibautstraat), i don' t know if it is still there but restaurant Baut across the street is pretty good.

Great post with amazing pictures. Amsterdam is really awesome! ☺😍

Cheers

Incredible, everything so different from venezuela

Cool, I like forward to the series.

This post makes me homesick...

Beautiful pics, @timsaid! I have actually around the corner of the 'Volkshotel' for many years (I left The Netherlands 4 years ago). I remember when it was still the headquarters of 'De Volkskrant', a national newspaper. A friend of mine did his internship there.

Then they moved to a more modern office, and the building first became an artist hot spot, with the Canvas club/restaurant at the rooftop.

Last year I was back to visit family, and I worked from The Volkshotel for one day. It's a great co-working space! You can use it for free, don't even need to be a guest at the hotel. Not even required to buy a coffee, although I'm sure most people do anyway. I know I did.

Congratulations @timsaid!
