Scott's Friday Photo - Rio Grande Gorge Bridge

Black Mesa.jpg

Located on Highway 64 ten miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico, the Gorge Bridge is 1280 feet long and spans the Rio Grande River and is one of the highest bridges in the country. Sources disagree over just exactly how high the bridge is above the river, with some saying 600 feet and others saying 650 feet. The gorge is particularly deep in this area because the river flows through a continental rift zone. This is an area when the continental plate tried to tear it's self apart millions of years ago, then stopped before the separation was complete.

It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is both a National Monument and a State Park. The bridge is something of a tourist attraction with parking available along with restrooms and an observation deck. The bridge has a pedestrian shoulder so you can walk across it if you like.

Ren and I visited in August. We had not heard of the bridge, but the manager of our hotel told us we should go see it while we were in the area. I'm so glad we listened. This was my favorite part of the entire trip. If you are in the area it is well worth seeing, and if the Bus Stop Ice Cream and Coffee Stop is there, you should absolutely treat yourself. Ren loved the fozen coffee.

These photos were taken with my Sony A6000 using the SEL1850 lens. The panorama above was stitched together from 3 photos.

Wow, look at that bridge! It looks really nice, I love the view around it too... Glad you guys visited it!

This is an area when the continental plate tried to tear it's self apart millions of years ago, then stopped before the separation was complete.

That sure is a historic place!

And the view south of the bridge is really nice too and the blue sky there just adds to the beauty of the photo.

It was amazing. The photo just can't capture the AWESOME view. It was amazing. But the best part was the coffee ice cream bus.

There is ice cream in that bus? Wow! Yum.... That is sure to make the trip complete... Well, you went for the coffee (right?), how was it?

Oh my goodness! It was wonderful. I loved every minute there. We have day dreamed converting a bus and doing our travel

Maybe you guys should give it a go? I guess it will be cool..

Thanks

It was very impressive in person. The photo does a fair job of capturing that.

Oh really? wish I could be teleported to that place. Lol

Make sure you let us know when you decide to teleport and we will teleport as well.

Hahahahah! Sure, I will!!

Amazing job of engineering!!! Great panoramic shot. I haven't yet learned how to do that. I always mess up somehow. Ahahah. 😂

PS: I have found your post because @audreybits featured you in her entry for the Pay It Forward Contest

@audreybits is just an amazing person! Thank you girl for sharing!

@trincowski, Scott just learned how to do this and he has done an amazing job. It blows me away at how he tackles the tough stuff. Keep working at it and you will get there!
Ren

Thanks.

The panoramas are not very difficult. Just taste multiple photos moving the camera a little each time. Make sure the photos overlap a bit, and try to keep 5he camera level.

I used ON1 Photoraw to stitch them together, nut there are many different programs that will do it.

Awesome pictures @xcoubtytravelers .. stunning view and shall we pay to get on the bridge? What is the best time to enjoy the view ..sunset or sunrise? Thank you for sharing this with us and keep steeming😉

Found your post through @audreybits entry post in the #payitforward contest this week.

We were there in the early afternoon. Based on the location and the fact that the gorge runs Nort to South in this area and the Bridge runs East to West, I would think that the Bridge would be nice at both Sunrise and Sunset. If you want a goo view down into the gorge that you would probably want the sun higher in the sky.

There was no charge for anything except the coffee.

Whoaaa.. anytime is a good time to spend there😉 that would be a nice stop. Thank you for your information @xcountytravelers ... uhmm one more thing 😊 when you're there.. did you know that people could use that bridge to do the "base jump" or bungee jumping?" too ... I'm sorry, I have so many questions in my head when I read your post😊

It was definitely an amazing stop for us. Unfortunately, we did not see anyone doing anything like base jumping and I am assuming it would not be allowed since there were suicide hotline phones on all the viewing platforms. That will be something I will see if I can find an answer to for you. Oh, and I love the questions!
Ren

Not so far as I know. I didn't see anyone doing anything like that, and it would be difficult to got over the guard rails.

Reportedly this bridge has been the site of a lot of suicides, and they have worked to make that more difficult.

Whoooaa... that must be a bit creepy if we spent the night at the bridge then😯 wonder how it's look like at night. I need to make a little research on google then 😊

Oh, now i want to go again!
Ren

Walking on the gorge
Waiting for the sun after the fog
With a cup of coffee staring at the rock
The silent witness of nature work

Thanks for sharing @xcountytravelers☺ wonderful snaps!

Oh, nice!

Great photos @xcountytravelers :) This is one place we did not make it to, so it's really cool seeing it through your eyes!

I found your post because @audreybits featured you in a Pay it Forward Curation Contest entry. You should consider joining us next week with an entry of your own; we'd love to have you there! It would also be a great way to grow your own community here as well :)

This week is hectic, but i do ha e it on the to do list next week. Is there anything special i have to do?
ren

It's on every week, so no panic first of all :) If you have a look at the contest, all the details are there, but it's really very straightforward. It's all about finding and promoting quality, underrated posts from those with a lower reputation.

Thanks. I wonder if im just nervous. I always i tend to participate, but always forget.

Absolutely nothing to be afraid of! It's such a helpful community ... we'll be nice if you mess up haha

Thank you.
