On a family trip to the Sanbona Nature Reserve we came across a pair of cheetahs who were just waking up as the sun was setting. I was able to get close enough to them to take a number of pictures of this one who was sitting up a few yards away from his dozing brother. The evening sun was coming from the side and the light was such that the mountains behind turned a dark blue, forming a perfect backdrop.
Sanbona is about 4 hours’ drive from Cape Town in the scrubland semi-desert of the Karoo - which explains the heather-like plants that can be seen in the picture.
