Hydrogen ions are just a proton. They lack neutrons because they're able to exist without neutrons, being stable because neutrons "glue" protons together and H only has 1 proton.
This unique property of the hydrogen ion could allow it to move like an electron, and pass the membrane in the same way electrons move through the crystalline molecular structure of metal.
A paradoxical phenomena with osmotic membranes is that they are actually impermeable to water. Gerald Pollack documented this in his book The Fourth Phase of Water (chapter 11), and Ben Krasnow shows this in the video below. Pollack described it as "paradoxical" based on the conventional mechanism for osmosis being movement of water.
Consider that some force is pushing H+ to move across the membrane in osmosis, in the same way an electrical voltage forces electrons to move. This would cause electrostatic imbalance unless the H+ is neutralized in the oxygen reduction reaction 4 H+ + 4 e- + O2 --> 2 H2O, and, unless OH- is also neutralized with 4 OH- --> 2 H2O + O2 + 4 e-. In other words, there would be imbalance unless water is formed in one compartment and decomposed in the other.
This theory of osmosis is that water forms de novo at one end of the membrane, from the hydrogen ions supplied by some force that "pumps" protons across the membrane, and from dioxygen supplied externally from air. Once the reaction has begun, to balance out charges, electrostatically, H+ will constantly move across the membrane, fuelling the continuous decomposition and production of water. Oxygen from the outside is necessary, unless O2 is able to pass across the membrane.

Good information. Thanks for sharing. What are practical applications of this? Any ideas? I'm just curious.

the same "respiration" between water and oxygen is likely the basis of life, so that's one application..
