Short Description:
The small Sonamasjid is known as the 'Sultanate Architectural Gems'. It is about half kilometer south-east from the Tahkhana complex of Firozpur quarters of Gaur-Lakhnauti, and about three kilometers south of Kotwali Darwaza, the capital of Bengal. Its location across the western part of the south side of a huge tank. There is a modern two-storied guest house built a few years ago by the Department of Archeology of the Government of Bangladesh, a few miles west of the mosque. A modern road has gone north and south through the guest house and the mosque. It seems that the road was in the old days and once it was connected by the Kotwali Darwaza, connecting the main city of Gaur-Lakhnauti with the southern suburbs.
According to an inscription placed on the upper entrance of the main entrance, the mosque was built by a Majlis-e-Majalis Majlis Mansoor Wali Muhammad Bin Ali. The letters containing the correct date of construction in the inscription are deleted. However, it is clear from the mention of the name of Sultan Alauddin Husain Shah, that the mosque was built sometime during his reign (1494-1519).
