A Burmese military aircraft with more than 100 people on board disappeared on Wednesday when it flew between Myeik City in southern Myanmar and Yangon, signaling the army and an airport source. Search operations are ongoing and involve vessels and aircraft.
According to the agency France Presse, authorities have reported that wreckage of the aircraft has been found at sea.
"Communication with the aircraft was lost at 1:35 p.m. when it was 20 miles east of Dawei," the army commander's office said in a statement.
Reuters reported that 120 people were on board: 106 soldiers and family members and 14 crew members.
The Chinese-made airplane, a Y-8 200F, had 809 hours of flight, maximum capacity for 200 passengers and left Yangon, the country's main city on a weekly flight that passes through several coastal cities, according to Efe.
Kyaw Htey, an aviation officer at Myeik Airport, said the weather was good at takeoff.
