17-04-2010 - Volcanic eruption glacier Eyjafjallajökull

Due to a volcanic eruption at Iceland, it was almost not possible to fly for a week in a large part of Europe. In Iceland, they have many mountains with too difficult names... Due to the volcanic eruption at glacier Eyjafjallajökull... (who? Eyjafjallajökull - not a clue how you say that :)), also Schiphol Amsterdam had to cancel all flights.

On our bicycles we cycled to Schiphol. It was very strange... A beautiful blue sky, but no flights. This eruption threw volcanic ash several kilometers up in the atmosphere. An airplane can not fly through ash, because the ashes will stop the engines.

A picture of that day. The control tower, with a nice blue sky.

On this gate you would normally see airplanes from America, but also KLM. Now it looks like a scene from a scary movie... No activities at all.

The information board says that all flight are canceled. A very strange sight.

For six days from 15 April to 21 April 2010 and again, in May 2010 all flight were canceled. It was so far, a once in a lifetime for me.

I hope you enjoyed my post.
