My wife and I recently transplanted our little family from The Jersey Shore to the South Coast of Mass. Over the 5 or so years we lived in the armpit of America, we embarked on a life of frugality, thrift, sustainability and even transitioned our style of consumption to just about #zerowaste. For around 4 years our sole budget for food came in the form of SNAP (formerly known as foodtsamps). Roughly $650 dollars fed 2 adults and 2 children each month a mostly organic non-gmo vegetarian diet. One of the ways we kept our poultry consumption close to zero waste was by going to a small local market called Lenny's in Brick NJ and buying Bell & Evans chicken either wrapped in paper or in one of our own containers when we remembered to bring it. After googling and making numerous phone calls to as many supermarkets, butchers and local places we could find, we wound up having a very pleasant phone call with Don, a manager at the Shaw's in Barrington, RI. It was a smooth 40 minute drive from where we live now. Don came out to greet us from behind the meat counter and was clearly happy to meet new customers. At the check out, I did my usual neurotic "I have my own bags" and "It's OK I'll bag it thank you" routine. As I began to bag, I noticed something. Every bagger was either using paper bags or the customers reusable ones. There wasn't a plastic bag in sight. When I pointed this out to my wife the cashier explained that the township of Barrington banned single use plastic bags in any and all stores. Mind-fucking-blown!
