Microplastics - A serious threat for the living beings

in plastics •  5 years ago

Human beings should be the most responsible creatures in the ecosystem. But we have been failing to prove the fact that we are responsible and we take care of the ecology and ecosystem. We have been continuously working on deforestation and destroying the ecosystem around us. The human activities have already contributed to most of the biological changes in this world. People many not believe about global warming but I'm sure it is definitely happening because we are creating an ecological imbalance. What is new about it? It's been there for several decades now. I don't think we were destroying so much before centuries. With the modernization we get to change a lot and the rapid growth and change is creating so much harm to the ecosystem.

Coming back to the topic, the plastic usage is becoming very high everywhere. Plastic is definitely an important utility for human beings and we cannot avoid plastics completely from our life. There are some use cases like Rain coats which cannot be made cheaper with other alternative materials. Understanding all these things, I'm not against plastics. But my concern here is that we have been using plastics for almost everything in our life. We have been accumulating so much of plastic trash everywhere in this world. The problem with plastics is that they are not bio-degradable. Even if we bury and take it out after several years, the plastics will still stay intact. Plastics like PVC are not even touched by acids.

So, the actual problem is that, when we dump plastics, we do it mostly in the oceans and the sea beds. It is identified that plastics don't decay but they break down into micro-plastics and mix with other things that are available in the world. Especially for the sea creatures it is a big threat because when micro plastics mix with sea water, it easily reaches the stomach of sea creatures like fish and prawns. Humans are dependent on these creatures for food and when humans consume these creatures as part of food, it reaches human body and gets deposited there. Micro-plastics can even look like nano-particles but they don't digest or decay in our body but they just stay there as a deposit.

We start getting problems only after so many years where our body will continuous try to push it out or try to digest it and end up forming cancer cells. Not just for humans but it happens for many creatures. We still don't know exactly how many creatures went extinct because of excessive usage of plastics. These micro-plastics are a serious threat to our environment. We have to go with the alternatives of plastics and completely shut down the production of plastics and plastic items. If we do it, thrash handling will also be easier for us.

We are responsible for all the plastic waste in oceans. Hope that we are changing our habits. See you!
