This poem tells about aspirations towards a different life and a different world.
The chess has rules that are embodied in the figures and their roles. In this poem these rules fail to respect because all the figures are the same and instead of moving across the board, they fly in the air. Their path is not predetermined, can not be predicted or controlled. There is no hierarchy and no roles that have long been defined. And the most important they do not compete and fight but dance.

It is written in Croatian and translated to English by me, and I’m not a good translator.
But the poem did not lost itself completely, poems never got lost, they always exist in their own world floating around us, waiting to catch them.

Chess with Owls
Owls sat on the wrong places.
Instead of king and queen,
castle* and horse.
So they don’t fight
but fly over the board.
Then we can no longer count the steps
and when they tell us to move the figure,
the right one,
we can not explain.
The fluttering of the wings
is not the same as the step.
And what now
when we no longer distinguish
the queen and the pawn, the bishop and the horse?
And the castles have become castles in the air.

*In Croatia rook figure is called ‘kula’=tower/castle or ‘top’=cannon; I had to translate it literary because of word play that connects that chess figure with ‘castle in the air’, and whole concept of this poem with a dream.

Sove su sjele na kriva mjesta.
Umjesto kralja i kraljice,
kule i konja.
Pa se ne bore,
nego lete iznad ploče.
I ne možemo više brojati korake
i kad nam kažu da pomaknemo figuru,
onu pravu,
ne možemo im objasniti.
Lepet krila nije isto što i korak.
I što sad kad više ne razlikujemo
kraljicu i lovca, pijuna i konja?
A kule su postale kule u zraku.
