The Water Walkers

Tall silhouettes broke across the night sky,

Dark shapes the only forewarning,

of the impending plight.

Fiery rays of the drowning sun

Sent flashes along the horizon.

Their grim figures loomed large,

Casting shadows of the darkness to come.

Terror fell over the land they crossed,

The screams of the doomed filled the air.

In a panic people fled before their path,

praying in vain for salvation.

Hollow eyes beamed flares of destruction,

The burning fires of hell ranged at their sides,

Laying waste to all around them.

Out of the dark of night they arrived,

Suddenly appearing from over the sea,

with little warning of their approach.

In their trail a swathe of death and despair,

Before them the doomed,

Little realising the agony to come,

Too late to find escape.

Ghostly figures hovered over the landscape,

A devastating plague

of menace and slaughter,

Before disappearing back across the water,

Back to the hell that had spawned them.

Their return a guarantee,

The only surety in this land of suffering.
