Hidden Lily

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

I found a lily
blossoming to see me.
Elegant, sweet-smelling,
each petal perfectly formed.

I took my lily home,
gave it pride of place,
filling the air with sweet spiciness
from warm colours of a setting sun.

But then, without warning,
it started to wilt.
Despite perfect conditions,
my lily grew weaker.

Talking to lilies
does not help them grow.
Words are meaningless.

I kept my lily hidden.

Nobody wants to see
a wilting flower,
unable to blossom.

Food, shade and peace
are not enough.
The seeds must be replanted
for a new lily to grow.

This feels like a little parable, but one with such applicability. The extended metaphor it sets out leaves everything to the reader.
