From the bus

From the bus leaving Beijing Zoo
I saw a child turning
Primitive pirouettes
In the park.

He was neither a dancer-to-be
Nor a side-show act
For the tourists' delight
Or remark.

He was merely attempting
To pluck the one green leaf
That sheltered the sun
From his dark.
