Educated dunce ( 100 Days of Poetry) { Day # 82 }

in poetry •  7 years ago  (edited)

Today I used Jamaican patios in my poem. Patois ( or Patwa) also called Jamaican creole by linguists is an English based creole with West African influences. It is spoken in Jamaica and many parts of the UK. However English is the official language.

Book learnin a nuh intelligence.
TRANSLATION:Book learning is not intelligence.
MEANING:1. Education does not result in common sense. 2.Not because someone is educated they have common sense.

Book learning
a nuh intelligence
,
mi see many fool wit dem degrees
who cyaah even hol a conversation
much less a relation.
Smart in books and dumb ina real life.
What a ting.

Cyaan even boil few dumplin
or plant likkle food,
cyaah decipher a sitaution
cuuse dem nuh know di play.
Nuff a dem spend so much
pon dem education
and still a work fi a next man.

Some a dem money might tall
like a wall weh Trump build
but the life skill cyaah build ina office.
You haffi learn from many to be like few.

Street knowledge cyaah buy a college,
di tru G a di one weh learn both.
Tie all goat, den medz with the elders round di lane
after dat guh trade some crypto fi di digital gain.
Dem yute deh will run tings.

Translation

Book learning does not make intelligence,
I’ve seen many fools with degrees,
Who can’t even hold a conversation,
much less a relation.
Smart with the books but foolish in real life.
Such a pity.

They can’t even boil a few dumplins
or plant some crops.
Can’t decipher a situation,
because they know not how people play.
Many have spent so much on an education
And still work for another man.

Some, their money might be as tall
As a wall that Trump built,
but life skills can’t be built in an office.
You have to learn from many to be like few.

Street knowledge can’t be bought in college,
The real men are the ones who learn both.
Tie a goat and then reason with the elders in the lane.
After that they may trade some crypt for some gains.
These are the youths who shall win at life.

Intelligence is made by complementing the learning of books with real life learning. The knowledge of the street is crucial to succeed.

Indeed it is @corderosiete....

Indeed brother, the balance is key now more than ever. I need to send my kids to the islands lol
