THE FIRST SNOWFLAKE (An Original Poem)

in poetry •  8 years ago  (edited)

The sun hangs high
in the morning sky,
in the cooling air
the first snowflake flies

It flutters down
for all to see,
and gets lost among
the fallen leaves

It’s not long before
his friends arrive,
more tiny flakes
from Autumn skies

Like diamonds shining
pure and bright,
they glitter in
the morning light

The air grows brutally
frigid as North winds blow,
and the leaves get lost
beneath the snow

If all is well
and all is right,
and this continues
through the night

We’ll dash for the door,
mittens in hand,
to begin this Winter’s
first SNOWMAN!

This poem makes me want to drink hot chocolate outside while wearing woollen gloves.

Now I want a hot chocolate. : )

Waiting on our first snow here in Virginia. Possibly next week.

We've had a few snowfalls here but mainly it's just been below average cold and gloomy.

you seem to exclusively write in 4 line stanzas - is there a literary reason for this? Just curious.

Hi, @johnjgeddes. Sometimes I like the structure of the four line stanza and how it helps the flow of the poem. Other times it's more of a visual thing for me, it creates order.

Enjoyed reading your poem. Do check out my poems too.

Thank you! I definitely will!

@ericvancewalton, I feel colder here in central california after reading your poem. No chance for me to make one outside my front door.

Lol. I wish I was on the West coast right now. There's no need for us to use our imaginations in Minnesota! It's in the single digits here. Brr.

Excellent work, as always Eric.

Much appreciated, my friend!

I followed. Don't go away :) I loved your writing.

Thank you @bontonstory! I really appreciate it!

I really enjoy reading poems on Steemit! I love to write poetry myself, and I love to see poetry spreading around!
But it made me miss winter... For a first time in my life I am spending winter in South America, so this is as close to snow as I could get this year haha.

Thank you for your comment @writingamigo! Poetry has really taken off here on Steemit, I'm thankful too. It's great to find a platform where people appreciate it. Enjoy the warmth down there! Where are you in South America?

At Peru, near Machu Picchu, but I will start moving from tomorrow around the rest of Peru, Bolivia, and for the Christmas to Buenos Aires!
Yes, it is great to see poetry being appreciated. It motivates me to create more :)

Ah, Machu Picchu! I would really like to visit there someday! That sounds like a wonderful adventure. Safe travels and have a great Christmas!

Thanks, I will do! Keep creating. I love to see quality content here on steemit!

Thank you very much!

@writingamigo I miss Peru. You'll have a great time. I haven't made it to macchu pichu yet but I've been to chintzanitza in Mexico and Tikal in Guatemala. Both sites are amazing.

Nice and timely, we got a snowfall here today! It's a rare treat here and only occurs once every few years. It's perfect too since it melts away before it gets all dirty and icy (usually anyway)

Thank you, @natureofbeing! Gray/black snow pretty much describes the month of March here in Minnesota. My wife and I sometimes vacation in Sedona, AZ and it's so nice there because the snow melts by noon. : )
