Many Unhappy Returns

I’m not surprised you’d come back
I always thought you would

I hated the way you left
So much unfinished between us two

So now where do we begin?
We can’t repeat the past

Although before you left
That was the only thing we had.

It’s been a year or more
Though it doesn’t seem that long

I even visited our old haunts
To see where we went wrong…

I think it started with the kids
We grew apart and you went out west

It was over when you started to drink
Rather than talk which we did best

So what’s the point, my friend?
We tried and it didn’t work out

You may as well head back to the coast
I’ve no room in my life for a ghost.

Now I know what a ghost is. Unfinished business, that's what.

When you realize you have only been hanging onto the image of a person, it is indeed time to let them go. Great writing, John:) Love the accompanying art as well:0

thanks, Pryde - you hit it dead on :)

Ah, but I think the ghost will still there...because you still have unfinished business. Did the kids get in the way, or did you just stop talking?

It was a male friend - knew him a long time - he never married or was interested in family himself - we lost touch and he basically drank himself to death

May I ask where this thought or writing came from in you. I mean I love this as it is so beautiful but sad that a year was lost. Sad that times changed.

thanks, Brian - It was a male friend - knew him a long time - he never married or was interested in family himself - we lost touch and he basically drank himself to death

so sorry

i wrote a new poem. please have a look. like your imput. it might be a bit much

Sorry to be replying so late, Brian - Had an eye infection and had to rest it - I'll have a look in a bit :)

You should just have let the ghost in clear things up so there will never be unfinished business between you two. It's sad knowing that you tried but didn't work out. I wish you all the best.

thank you!

Bittersweet and heartfelt. I feel your poem acknowledges the past, both good and bad, but seems to have grown beyond wallowing in it, or holding expectations of what will never be. I believe there's strength in that perspective. I like it!

thank you for your response.
