Owl-inspired Poetry: Twilight Song

in poetry •  6 years ago

I used to walk in the woods a lot, an hour or more each day. I’d head out with my dog and sing my way along the path, to let the bears know where I was.

Sometimes I’d walk quiet and listen, or play song games with birds.

This poem burst into my mind one evening, years ago, as dusk began to fall. One owl called from the far side of the forest, and another answered, closer to where I was.

I think this originally came with music, but I’ve forgotten it now. (Sound familiar, @zipporah?)

I do remember the poem creating itself in my mind, as if my muses wanted to preserve the moment in the magic of words. I repeated it to myself until I got home and could write it down. So interesting to witness the way writing happens, sometimes.

Twilight Song

Original writing by Katrina Ariel.

I stopped then, and listened,
Stood still long moments without measure,
And heard, in the time after the sun
Sets behind the mountains,
The twilight song of two owls,
One near, one distant,
Resounding through the forest.

It’s a simple poem, but it captures the memory so sweetly. For this, I treasure it, because I'd forgotten the experience until coming across this little poem in an old notebook.

What about you?

Have you had the chance to listen to owls waking up the night? What sounds in nature call to your heart?

Whatever happens, keep singing your song!

Peace. @katrina-ariel

Wonderful piece. I love going on short walks from my mom’s cabin here in Tennessee - I’m not sure what type of owls they are, but they’re always like...”Who, Who...who stole the cookies from the cookie jar, was it you?” At least that’s what I think they’re saying... so high up in trees, they should know I can’t hear them from way up there. 🦉

Anywhosie, I’d like to think the world would be a better place if people took walks into the woods and just listen... Actually they should also look at the stars - that’ll really put things into perspective 😉.

Why, yes – that does sound endearingly familiar.

It's only ever the guitar parts that I forget; the words forever remain, indelibly etched into the walls of my heart.

The poem is lovely – simple, yet poignant. Gave me those subtle truth chills...gotta love that! <3 xo

Thank you! Yes, it's simple, but brings me back to the sound and smell of the forest. And sometimes it seems music is a fleeting thing, though sometimes it sticks forever. As for your sweet photo, I want to take the owl home and set it free. ((hugs))

This was on the ghats in Varanasi. I also wanted to free him. There were also parakeets in cages next to this poor lil' guy. Every single one of them had broken feathers from struggling in that tiny space.

Though this image breaks my heart, I also remember this moment so well – it was as though the owl was speaking directly to me, wanting to be sure I was aware of his plight. There was some kind of recognition there, as though he knew I was a kind-hearted creature who would surely free him if only I could.

Oh! So sad, yet what a connection. Sometimes all we can do is love the animals we meet in passing in this way.

Really nice post! Compliments !

This is really beautiful - the way you have distilled that moment with your words. It must have been like unearthing a bit of treasure when you found it in your notebook and it took you right back to that time?

A strange sound does it it for me- the calling of wood pigeons. It's a really common sound, but was always the sound I woke up to as a child on my parents' smallholding!

Yes! It was like finding a treasure in the pages of the notebook. You know, sometimes pigeons cooing is a sweet sound to my ears as well! I can imagine it's a nice one if it brings back good childhood memories for you. Thanks for sharing and for the sweet comment. :)

It does... it's that feeling of infinite possibility that you used to get as a kid, just after you'd woken up :)

Have a lovely evening. E x

Very nice!

Sometimes we get music and sometimes we get lyrics. These were a beautiful gift you gave yourself or nature gave them or both of you. It does not really matter anyway, they are amazing and very lovely 💚💚💚

Thank you so much, my friend! It was a perfect moment in time, and I was grateful to have heard the two owls talking to each other. :)

Very nice poem. Yes, I love hearing the owls in the early morning hours.

I so relate. I've had songs that literally awoke me from a sound sleep and demanded to be captured on paper, and then I had to find a way to record it somehow before I lost the tune.

As for the owls, I've loved them since childhood. One of my closest friends in Florida had a place on the Withlacoochee River that we all affectionately called Hooty Point, because that literally was the street name, because of the abundance of owls in the neighborhood.

All year long, we had only to go outside to hear the owls calling, many different kinds, and it is one of the most peaceful and beautiful sounds on the planet.

Unless, of course, you are a mouse. ;-)

We had a family of screech owls, that nested across the street from my house in Largo, and I always loved it when they returned each year.

We have lots of different kinds of owls in our woods here, though more seasonally, and nothing is more lovely than sitting by our firepit, watching the stars, and listening to the owls call. Magical.
