'The Invisibles' - an Original Poem

in poetry •  7 years ago

invisibles

two dogs in the street
sparring over
a chicken carcass

the street an alley
turning behind
shopfronts, hugging
the brick wall
walls

from a back door step
the immigrant boy
watches

his apron specked
with grey ash

his father calling
from the counter

but who else
watching?

a dozen black birds
shifting in the eaves
look down,
calculating an angle

the townie mammal
picks through old cans

a maggot clinging
to the chicken

Like this - its unusual and I had to get my head around where it was taking me - which is why I like it

Thanks Andrew - I appreciate the feedback. It's true, I often like to make a reader work at a poem. Oftentimes the reward is that much sweeter, I just hope I don't scare people away! Cheers.

Well it works well for me, chicken or no chicken ;-)

Nothing illustrates the practical desperation of life quite like the alleyways of a city. Well crafted m8.

Thanks, it sure is a hard world out there. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
